Saw nationally ranked Peachtree Ridge up close in their first game Saturday night. Been reading all the hype about their 12 + Division -1 offered players including Clemson target 2017 5 star Deangelo Gibbs.
Our little private Christian school team from Nashville beat them 35-21. My son plays for Christ Presbyterian Academy. His coach is Ingle Martin who played QB at Florida, Furman and 3 seasons in the NFL. We have 3 kids with offers. All 2 stars kids but we have 5 star heart and discipline and 5 star coaching.
The game Saturday showed me what I already knew, great coaching matters even more than talent especially at the HS level.
During warm ups it was blatantly obvious to any outside observer which team had more size, speed and athleticism. Our team is a bunch of undersized white kids from the suburbs but we play mean and with an edge. Very fundamentally sound tacklers.
Here's my scouting report for those who care....bear in mind it was 92 degrees at kickoff with high humidity. But I would prescribe Midol to this team for all the cramps I saw. Ha!
5 Star Deangelo Gibbs 2017 - Clemson offer along with everyone else. Played 1st half. Had Cramps or some other undisclosed injury injury. Did not play 2nd half. Caught a couple of bubble screens in 1st half for less than 10 yards. Called for a blatant offensive pass interference call. We kept him contained all night. Poor body language after being tackled. I do not foresee him at Clemson with the attitude he displayed. Our kids thought he quit.
4 Star Nygel Warrior - Son of Dale Carter and nephew of Jake Reed. Cousin to Gibbs. Transferred from Westlake to play with Gibbs. UT and UGA battling it out along with Bama. Let them have this kid. He played 3 Qtrs of the game. Bottled him on punt returns. Cramps. Pulled himself out. (Read on UGA site he tweaked his hamstring and that is why he didn't play in 4th qtr.)
3 star Chad Clay - UGA commit. This kid is a player. I'd take him all day everyday. Very active tackler. Great in coverage. A couple of pass deflections.
Baylen Buchanon - Louisville Commit - son of Ray Buchanon. Called his name very little but they gave up very few passing yards on very few attempts. He came up and made a few tackles in run game as well.
3 star RB Malik Sanders - Louisville Commit. Shared carries with other kids. Had one series with 3 long runs that resulted in a score. Pulled himself due to cramps though and did not play 4th Qtr. best RB they had. He's no Feaster but he is a college RB material.
3 star Connor Heyward. - QB 2017 Louisville, Arizona, Pitt offers. Son of Ironhwad Heyward. Brother played at Ohio State. Dual threat QB. Gifted runner. Good size but only 6-1. Drops his eyes too quickly when feeling pressure. Played well in 4th Qtr with ability to scramble and extend plays. Took a beating kept playing unlike Gibbs and Warrior. Had a fumble and a couple of picks. Needs development as a QB. I'd take our 2star QB over him at this point but he's got 2 seasons including this year before college to develop. I think he'd make a great safety or RB in college. Tough kid that is already over 200lbs.
4 Star Breon Dixon - 2017 he played Mike in this game. He's built like a SAM. Fast downhill tackler. All over the place. Got a costly personal foul for blatant late hit and an off sides on a blitz to extend our opening 14 play drive. Other than that he was their best defender. Looks like he could play safety as well. UGA wants this kid. Haven't heard of any CU interest I liked this kid as a defensive player. Plays nasty and with an edge.
They have 4 other kids in the Rivals system listed with mid major offers. None others ranked high enough yet that I think would make it to an offer for Clemson. but they have others with tons of talent and speed.
They also have a sophomore DL that is not listed properly in Rivals because I think he changed schools. He's 265 lbs that I think major colleges will be recruiting soon. He attended Dawgnight at UGA over the summer. He's number 90 and his name is Darnell Jeffries. He made a bunch of plays. Clemson needs to get someone looking at him ASAP. He's raw and young but he will have the tools to be a major D-1 player in my opinion.
Will be interesting to see how much they improve and how they play against Archer in a game being hyped by Rivals due to the number of D-1 recruits. Archer has Kyle Davis, EJ Price etc. If Peachtree can eliminate the penalties and turnovers and get in better shape they have the talent to live up to their national ranking. I think we shocked them and their fans on Saturday night.
