I do think there’s been sort of a movement pushing black athletes towards HBCUs. But your overall point about going from Clemson to Wofford is right. It’s just kind of ridiculous.
This is pretty historically ignorant. Those schools were started because black people weren’t allowed at other schools. They aren’t all black now, which is why they’re called HBCUs instead of BCUs.
At any rate, I think we ought to be working towards the point where we all recognize the absurdity of our racial system, rather than reinforcing it by telling people they can only truly belong around mostly other people whose skin looks like theirs. I’d like to see HBCUs get more resources and generally be able to improve what they can offer, but I’m not sure that HBCUs want to have too broad of an appeal. There’s a tension going on with the historical and current mission of HBCU’s and progress towards a post-racial society.
