Have the last 2 years taught us some geopolitical lessons?

Russia can withhold oil and gas from Europe. It counteracts NATO’s ability to imposes sanctions to stop an annexation or invasion of Ukraine.

Lesson: Don’t rely on a potential enemy or unfriendly government for a vital national resource.

Remember the risk of our pharmaceutical reliance on China in 2020?

Lesson: Don’t rely on a potential enemy or unfriendly government for items vital to the health of your country.

Chip shortages, material shortages, manufacturing delays…

Lesson: Don’t rely on a potential enemy or unfriendly government for items vital to your economy.

It was wildly short-sited, ignorant and downright reckless for western governments to allow their countries to become dependent on Russia or China for anything of importance. Our leadership should ensure we change this course immediately.

It also underscores why energy independence is a matter of national security. European countries may be unable to act in their best interest specifically because of their dependence on another country for energy.

This is amazingly obvious, right? And should have been amazingly obvious to our governmental leaders, right?
