Spurrier Era Feels Close to Finished
....."Now, Spurrier could turn his and South Carolina's season around with an upset win in Georgia; certainly, he's pulled off improbable wins before against the Bulldogs. (Like, say, last year.) But Spurrier isn't even acting like someone who thinks that's going to happen. It's gotten so bad that Georgia players are saying things like, "Coach Spurrier still has our respect, absolutely," which is what you say about someone who used to beat your brains in but you're not afraid of anymore. This is Spurrier cowed, in danger. It feels like the end of something.
This Saturday really could be his last stand. If he can't pull one more Georgia rabbit out of his hat, he won't be able to quiet any more criticism. Spurrier has been the loudest voice in college football for almost 30 years. Now he's shushed, chastened, needled and faux-"respected."
I shouldn't feel bad for him. But I sort of do. I think, in spite of myself, I sort of miss him already."
Great article.
