John Simpson first generated recruiting coverage upon attending the Dabo Swinney Camp last June.
The Dabo Swinney Football Camp kicks off this afternoon with its first three-day session.
The headliner for the opening session will be North Charleston (S.C.) Fort Dorchester four-star lineman John Simpson.
Simpson (6-5, 298) figures to get the red-carpet attention from Clemson’s staff during his attendance today and throughout Tuesday. He has held Clemson on top, to varying degrees, since last fall. Simpson competed at Alabama’s camp for three days last week and is also strongly considering South Carolina.
He is being accompanied by 2018 teammate Dakereon Joyner (6-1, 173), a quarterback/athlete who cites offers from Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and UNC. Joyner has openly proclaimed Clemson his favorite on numerous occasions.
Several other prominent in-state prospects will be among the campers scheduled to compete for all three days.
Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Wando 2017 four-star receiver OrTre Smith is hunting for a Clemson offer. Smith (6-3, 205), whose mother played volleyball at Clemson, competed at the Rivals Five-Star Challenge in Baltimore, Md., during the weekend and holds offers from South Carolina, Florida State, Tennessee and Louisville among others.
Florence (S.C.) Wilson 2018 defensive end Xavier Thomas is also expected to be on hand. Thomas (6-2, 235), arguably the state’s top prospect in his class at this early juncture, holds an FSU offer while growing up a South Carolina fan.
Thomas will be juxtaposed with Anderson (S.C.) T.L. Hanna’s Stephon Wynn (6-3, 225), son of former Tigers tight end Stephon Wynn Sr.
Central (S.C.) D.W. Daniel 2018 linebacker Jake Venables, son of defensive coordinator Brent Venables, will be doing the rare double dip of participating in both sessions this week. Venables (6-1, 185) reportedly turned heads at Oklahoma’s camp during the weekend.
Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips 2017 defensive end Robert Porcher IV will be on hand as well. Porcher (6-2, 227) is the son of former NFL three-time Pro Bowler and S.C. State standout Robert Porcher.
Argyle (Texas) three-star tight end commitment J.C. Chalk is also back to camp for three days, as he did last summer.
While the majority of one-day performers arrive Tuesday, there are a handful of notables competing today only.
New Orleans (La.) Holy Cross three-star cornerback Kyle Meyers picked up a Mississippi State offer recently and has also camped at Ole Miss. Meyers (5-11, 170) wanted to audition at Clemson and FSU before advancing his decision.
Norcross (Ga.) Greater Atlanta Christian 2017 four-star quarterback Davis Mills is expected to throw today as well. Mills (6-3, 188) has offers from Miami, UNC, N.C. State, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, UCLA and West Virginia.
Other notables today include Greenville (S.C.) Christ Church 2018 linebacker Khalid Jones and Blythewood (S.C.) Westwood guard/center Torrey Boone.
Tuesday’s list is star-studded, we will feature plenty of those attendees in our coverage this evening and tomorrow morning.
