Does this science count?

Clearly this is wrong. Clearly.

So, it’s a theory. one of the more interesting theories that I’ve seen recently is that Zack Wilson is a better pro QB prospect than Trevor Lawrence. I’ve got lots of theories also and will be happy to share them.

So this will be round table soon. So I’ll drop a quick opinion. Not an earth shattering one by any stretch.

Florida has been nearly wide open as long (or longer) as most states. Our hospitals were never under water (be weary of the term “staffed capacity”).

We have an elderly demographic in many areas.

Kids have been in person school.

Sports’s leagues being played mask free.

I know many who have had C19 and very few that had issues that required medical attention.

My data research is based off of the last year living and observing.

Let’s move on to the next thing....

I don’t have an opinion about the face mask issue raised here, but based on an analysis of the language in the abstract it feels like a hoax.

Edit: looking into it the source seems legit, but phrases like “ for reducing the...infectivity of coronavirus” and “facemasks have compromised safety and efficacy profile” along with the misspelling in this phrase brought up my doubts, “providing prosper information.”

The spelling issues are likely due to it being a UK journal publication. i still think it’s just a “look at me article,” trying to promote interest in the journal by taking a contrary view. Unlike most scientific journal, this article uses no actual data to support its theory other than completely unrelated studies and references taken out of context. It’s very similar to Chris Simms take on Trevor Lawrence. If he was the owner of the Jags, there is no way he takes Zack Wilson over TL. It’s just click bait.

Look people.

Dental and Surgical Masks CAN filter down to 0.1 micron. Very good
Estimates are that the Corona virus is around 1.2 microns.

Is your $3.00 mask that good?
Especially when you're wearing it half-ass, half the time?

Masks are a joke.
If you read any study about anyone coughing or sneezing......... 6 feet is a joke.

It's all a joke. An evil political joke taking advantage of a very real virus.
You know, like viruses we have always had around, and will have more of.
They are serious.
They are not worthy of shutting down the US (world?)

Social distance until we all get masks.
Now Social distance AND wear a mask.
Now..........get the vaccine (it's not one) AND wear a mask AND social distance.

...............so NONE of it works?

Despite having worn a mask in the operating room for years, I believe that the 15 minutes I wear one while shopping at Publix will take years off of my life
Its truly mind bottling that asking folks to put on a mask for a little while when they’re in close proximity to other people in an effort to reduce the chances of those other people dying is so divisive and creates such vitriol.

Besides the writer of that abstract apparently barely being able to write in English, here's some more information about that journal:

Medical Hypotheses is a not-conventionally-peer reviewed[2] medical journal published by Elsevier. It was originally intended as a forum for unconventional ideas without the traditional filter of scientific peer review, "as long as (the ideas) are coherent and clearly expressed" in order to "foster the diversity and debate upon which the scientific process thrives."[3] The publication of papers on AIDS denialism[4][5][6] led to calls to remove it from PubMed, the United States National Library of Medicine online journal database.[5] Following the AIDS papers controversy, Elsevier forced a change in the journal's leadership. In June 2010, Elsevier announced that "Submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by the Editor and external reviewers to ensure their scientific merit".[7]
...
Medical Hypotheses was founded in 1975 by physiologist David Horrobin, who was the editor-in-chief of the journal until his death in 2003 as well as the head of the Schizophrenia Association in Britain.[8] Horrobin was a controversial figure, a scientist and entrepreneur best known for his promotion of evening primrose oil as a treatment for diseases, leading the British Medical Journal (BMJ) to predict that he "may prove to be the greatest snake oil salesman of his age."[4][9]
...
Other famous articles featured in the journal include the proposal from Jarl Flensmark of Malmö, Sweden, that schizophrenia may be caused by wearing heeled shoes,[20] and an article from Svetlana Komarova of McGill University positing that facial hair may play a role in preventing the development of cancer.[21]

In what psychiatrist and The Guardian columnist Ben Goldacre called an "almost surreally crass paper", two Medical Hypotheses authors posited "mongoloid" as an accurate term for people with Down syndrome because those with Down syndrome share characteristics with people of Asian origin, including a reported interest in crafts, sitting with crossed legs and eating foods containing monosodium glutamate (MSG).[22] Correspondence items have presented masturbation as a treatment for nasal congestion.[23][24] Science reported that a 2009 paper by Georg Steinhauser on navel lint "became an instant classic".[4][25]

In 2007, journalist Roger Dobson published a book in which he collected and described 100 Medical Hypotheses articles called Death Can Be Cured.

I mean, it's pretty inconvenient and annoying, and people aren't just being "asked." We're also over a year into all of this, and we're not really being told when to expect mask mandates to end. But it's also not the hardest thing to do to wear a mask, and mask wearing is supposed to be a mitigation strategy for when you're in not so well ventilated public spaces with other people. Masks actually help us be able to safely be inside, in public, with other people, until enough people have immunity. And the good news is that the light at the end of the immunity tunnel is getting pretty big.

@tigerworx , you point out that surgical masks can filter out particles smaller than the respiratory particles responsible for most COVID infections. But then you ask whether a $3.00 mask is that good. Surgical masks are generally cheaper than $3, and you can probably get something like a KN95 that filters better than a surgical mask for that price.

You're certainly right that no mask is going to work very well if you're not wearing it correctly, and that masks aren't 100% effective (they're more effective as source control than protection for the wearer). But research does show that pretty much any material a mask is made out of will reduce the amount of droplets somebody breathes out, and that the particles they expel won't travel as far. The only 100% effective masks would be the fit-tested N95s. However, when everybody near you is wearing a mask, it makes it a lot less likely that somebody else is going to expel a particle that then makes it past your mask. It's a compounding effect. When you combine social distancing with everybody wearing masks, it makes it fairly unlikely that anything's going to be passed between people. But the limited effectiveness of mask wearing (because of people not wearing them right, or the mask not fitting right) means that social distancing is more important, and is one reason why they thought people shouldn't wear masks at first. Now, we wear masks in situations where we're inside and/or can't social distance, and that allows us to safely do things where we have to be indoors in public or can't social distance.

So, again, it's not that none of this "works," it's just that the only thing that will pretty much guarantee that COVID won't be a problem when you're in a crowded public space is a large portion of the population getting vaccinated. The mask and social distancing measures are just mitigation measures until we get there, and they work better when you do them together.

Nailed it...I want to agree with the article, but it's just impossible when there are that many grammatical errors in a single paragraph.

Very succinct argument that I agree with entirely. Except our Nation's fearless leader wears his while walking alone outside in a cemetery so now I'm getting some contradictory impressions...

Like when some refuse to believe in God, even though it reduces their chances of eternal damnation? So divisive!

Yep, that's precisely where the fascists got it right, their slogan of "my mask protects you and your mask protects me". Doesn't matter if it's true or not, that was the excuse that millions of lazy and irresponsible people needed. They cling to it like drowning victims, and they'll drag you down with them if you get too close.

I've actually heard quite a few people talk about "that person who wasn't wearing a mask at the grocery store gave me covid", LOL!!! As if they could possibly identify when and where they came in contact with a virus. But then again, these people are lazy and irresponsible, they aren't looking for the truth, nor do they care about the truth. They want convenience, and what could possibly be more convenient than blaming someone else.

Interesting abstract, got a link to the study and any peer reviews?

Ding, ding, ding. And here we have a winner. That's an abstract, and I'd think a partial one at that. Note the phrase "it has been hypothesized..." That's the theory that the scientists are going to test... namely that masks don't help. That's what the experiment is going to test. Do you have the results?

For instance, I could have a legit experiment testing the gravity of earth. I could say: It has been hypothesized that if I draw a pentagram of goat blood on the floor, that would reverse the gravity in the room and a "dropped" hammer would fall to the ceiling. That would be legit if you set the experiment up properly. Stupid, but legit.

THEN you test the hypothesis. I think we know that the above wouldn't work, so the results of dropping the hammer and said hammer still falling to the floor would disprove the hypothesis.

That's the way science works...

you have spent this much time in a pandemic and you still have yet to learn the most basic level of biology. this is why the public schools are failing. take some responsibility and read a damn book.

So what is the size of virus particles?

And, since you read so many books, what went wrong with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine?

Don't leave out Sweden who went for herd immunity with hardly any lockdowns and even less mask requirements.

I think you are missing the purpose of masks. ill make an analogy. If we wanted to end all traffic fatalities, we could accomplish this by simply prohibiting the use of motor vehicles. Why don’t we do this? It’s simple. Such a drastic measure would cripple the economy.

Another approach is to implement speed limits, requiRe the use of seat belt, requir manufacturers to install air bags, ipleme laws that prohibit drinking or taking drugs while driving, etc. do these measures work completely? Absolutely not.

However, does that mean that they are not effective in some measure. Also, no. Face masks are not the solution, but they are also not completely ineffective. As pointed out above, doctors wear masks in a surgery room for a reason. Just because some bozos choose to not wear a mask appropriately doesn’t mean that the ones that do aren’t effective. Every bit counts, and if that means I have to be inconvenienced and wear a mask when I go to Home Depot, then so be it.

I think there are a few factors at play here:

1) Mask Nazis who insist that anyone who isn't wearing a mask is the devil or some damn thing
2) Mask ordinances that are stupid and overreaching - such as the bans we had on outdoor recreation.
3) The shutdowns which may be having a worse affect on people than the damn virus.

Masks are viewed as a symbol of all of that.

Seems like a lot of misplaced anger and frustration over the pandemic. People seem to be pretty emotional over the whole pandemic thing and its easier for them to cope with this by directing their anger at perceived 'wrongs'.

People wanting to be safe for grandma isn't killing others or hurting anything. Literally the flu damn near disappeared this year and its because of the precautions we are taking, and yet masks don't work? Anyway its impossible to reason with those who have made up their minds.

wow. you're not even understanding the problem correctly. it's truly incredible how sure people can be when they have not one idea about what is going on. how did we become such an uneducated society? was it always a ruse that the american public was smart?
