Here’s this week’s rabbit hole I fell down and need to share that will likely leave you asking yourself, “Well, what was the point of all of that?”.

Jack Crighton has been one of the more polarizing players in recent Clemson memory and has created a bit of a cult following in the game threads, facetious or not. I think what makes Jack so divisive as a player is that, ironically, his performances are pretty polar opposites from one another. Looking through Jack’s regular season stats I noticed a trend that he either has high end performance or contributes next to nothing.

Jack has 10 multi-hit games this season out of the 37 he has played in., 4 of those games are 3+ hit games. In those 10 games Jack has accumulated the following stats:
.610 BAvg (25-41), 3 2B, 3B, 7RBI, 14R, 3BB/3K

In the other 27 games that Jack had plate appearances he posted the following numbers:
.132 BAvg (9-68), 2 2B, HR, 9RBI, 6R, 5 GIDP, 13BB/14K

Therein lies the rub with JMFC. There is not any sort of reliable consistency with his offensive production. BUT, BUT!!! Is that not the case for every hitter!?! Their numbers are carried by a few high-end performances!?! I mean, yeah. A little. But not to the extent that we see with Crighton. I also looked through the regular season stats for Crighton and some others and looked at what percentage of games they had 0, 1, 2+ hits on the season thus far.

Crighton:
0-fer: 46%
1 Hit: 27%
2+ Hits: 27%

Purify:
0-fer: 30%
1 Hit: 44%
2+ Hits: 26%
As cold as JP was for a stretch, he has still registered more consistent production with at least a hit in 70% of games, 16% higher than JMFC.

Gaffney:
0-fer: 33%
1 Hit: 43%
2+ Hits: 24%
As “bad” as Gaffney has been he still is chipping in offensively more consistently than Crighton, getting at least 1 hit in 67% of his games, 13% higher than JMFC.

Piano:
0-fer: 31%
1 Hit: 42%
2+ Hits: 27%
As much as Paino has been maligned he is getting at least one hit in 69% (nice) of his games, 15% higher output than JMFC.

Ciufo:
0-fer: 40%
1 Hit: 45%
2+ Hits: 15%
As bad as Ciufo is as a hitter, and very clearly the weakest bat in the lineup, he is still registering at least 1 hit in 60% of his games, a small but still measurable 6% improvement on JMFC’s output.

Priest:
0-fer: 40%
1 Hit: 43%
2+ Hits: 17%
The king of “all or nothing” is still registering a hit in 60% of his games. Like Ciufo, a 6% better rate than LMFC.

Crighton is tied with Paino for the highest % of 2+ hit games at 27%. Crighton is also the leader of the group with a 46% 0-Fer rate, higher than offensive whipping boy Andrew Ciufo’s 40% 0-Fer rate.
