Third Thursday Staff Update
By: Tigerillustrated.com
This is a brief update but a noteworthy one that supports our reporting throughout much of the last week.
As you have read Larry's reporting this week, you have become more familiar with Clemson assistant coach Mickey Conn and senior defensive assistant Wesley Goodwin.
Earlier this afternoon Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy four-star defensive end Jihaad Campbell announced his decommitment from Clemson. Campbell was not at IMG Academy today.
It should be noted that Campbell told Rivals.com it has been communicated to him by Clemson that Conn and Goodwin will be serving as Clemson's co-defensive coordinators going forward.
As Larry has reported, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney could make his first public comments on Brent Venables' replacement and or defensive staff reassignment over the next day or two. -- RIVALS.COM
Virginia's university plane is flying back to Clemson from Charlottesville, presumably with Tony Elliott and his family on it.
The visit and negotiations between Elliott and UVA apparently didn't go as well as expected yesterday, when it appeared close to a done deal that Elliott would become the Cavaliers' new head coach.
Though some might be concluding that Elliott's return without a deal means he's no longer involved with UVA, our information points to this not being over. It also appears Elliott remains a candidate at Duke and might still have his choice between the two jobs.
According to our sources, the ball is in Elliott's court with Virginia and he's struggling with whether to take the job. It's unclear what, exactly, is causing the indecision. But earlier this week Virginia was close to closing the deal with alum Anthony Poindexter when talks broke down, thereby turning their focus to Elliott.
Michigan assistant Josh Gattis has been reported as a possible candidate at Virginia, but sources tell us he has not yet spoken with the Cavaliers.
According to Steve Wiseman of the Raleigh News & Observer, Duke hit pause on its search today to wait and see what happened with Elliott and Virginia. -- LARRY WILLIAMS
