Thursday update on Clemson and its transfer QB target
By: Paul Strelow
It seems as if Dabo Swinney has had hundreds of former Alabama teammates whose children have grown into football prospects and, consequently, Clemson targets.
Paul "Bear" Bryant might be the one guy Swinney isn't said to have once roomed with.
But the Tigers will take the legendary former Bama coach's great grandson ... if they can.
As you read here Wednesday, Clemson attracted a visit from a grad transfer quarterback: Paul Tyson, who spent his first three collegiate seasons with the Tide before transferring this past season to Arizona State.

Tyson (6-5, 230) is every bit of his listed height; we wrote about observing him with former Clemson quarterback and current staffer Cole Stoudt, who at 6-4 is no small dude. Tyson edged Stoudt in size and looked the part of a fully mature player at the end of his college days.

The case is easily made for why Tyson would be the ideal fit for Clemson.
There's familiarity; the Tigers were involved in his recruitment early, and Tyson -- rated a four-star out of Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville -- threw for quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter at the 2017 Swinney Camp.
Non-football-related & off topics
Clemson put its eggs, though, in the basket of Bo Nix and Sam Howell, only to come away with Taisun Phommachanh the next spring.
Bama took Tyson as part of a two-quarterback class featuring Taulia Tagovailoa -- Tua's brother, who wound up transferring to Maryland.
Tyson backed up Bryce Young in 2021, completing 10 of 16 passes for 150 yards, before leaving for Arizona State in search of a starting job.
He was one of three vying for the Sun Devils' job last spring before Arizona State brought in Florida transfer Emory Jones. Tyson made one brief cameo during the season before re-entering the portal two weeks ago.
Clemson, as we shared, is in the market for a veteran quarterback with its two recruited scholarship quarterbacks -- projected starter Cade Klubnik and incoming four-star Christopher Vizzina -- being just a sophomore and freshman, respectively. In essence, the hunt for another Hunter Johnson.
Per our intel, Tyson came in as an unofficial visitor.
We were told by multiple sources Wednesday night that Tyson is not a foregone conclusion to Clemson. While we aren't sure what options he is weighing, Tyson does have a decision to make and figures to do so soon. East Carolina, North Alabama and Chattanooga, among others, would be able to offer the route to a possible starting job.
So there's still work to be done.
