I've been thinking the last couple of days. I was pretty pissed with Trump for instigating that riot and I still am. I thought that he should be impeached or removed by the 25th. I've changed my mind after cooling off a bit. Not that Trump doesn't deserve it, but I'm not sure than the effort is worth the result. Republicans and Dems have some common ground right now. We only have 12 more days and Trump can move to Florida and play golf and bitch on twitter all he wants to. Pence seems unwilling to use the 25th to remove Trump and even if he was willing to, I think it would be difficult time wise. Likewise, I think the HOR could fairly quickly impeach him, but I'm not sure that the will is there to remove him from office in the Senate with only a week left by the time they can even get started. It might be best just to let Trump hang out in the oval office for a week or so and then have Airforce One take him down to Florida. Removing a President is and should be a huge deal and should be done for the good of the country. Removing Trump now is just... unnecessary.

Trump is going to have a tough time staying out of jail with all the state level charges he's got in NY. He's got a bunch of debt and we don't have to listen to him any more... Time to move on from the worst President ever...

I agree with much of this. Don't give him a chance to play the victim. It's his favorite role. He will be deprived of the attention he so sorely needs soon enough. And this week's insurrection will be the lasting image of Trump, Trumpists, and Trumpism in America.

Good riddance.

Well I was never going to advocate for the 25th or another impeachment. I just want everyone to know what a POS Trump is and that he's been lying and intimidating everyone to get his way. He deserved to be impeached over the Russia probe, he deserved it for the Ukraine intimidation, and he deserved it for trying to intimidate the GA SOS and also for 'leading' protestors to a riot. But the GOP is broken, no accountability. No reason to even try, they don't care.

Again, those people were there with zip ties, weapons, nooses and makeshift gallows. They were an organized militia there to kill Mike Pence, Nancy Pelosi, and who else knows. And they were there on Trump's orders. All the people in the presidential line of succession were there and were at risk. Who would've been left standing then? Trump, and what do you think would've happened next. He would've declared a state of emergency and suspended the transition of power.

Yesterday was a far right coup led by Donald Trump and his band of fanatical, radicalized, white supremacist, terrorists. With all due respect, it is not time to let it go. If we let it go, we're just kicking the can down the road. These people need to know they cannot do things like what happened Wednesday.

The man just led a coup against the United States government. What makes you think he won't try again before the 20th?

He needs to go ASAP.

He did. And he might. BUT the military won't follow him now and that's the ONLY way he can succeed. The posters above are correct. Trying to rush through a 25th amendment or an impeachment will cause chaos, and Trump is at his best when everything is chaotic.
As has been true his whole life, Trump is his own worst enemy. There's no doubt in my mind that he'd have been reelected if he'd done even a decent job of handling the pandemic. So while he was doing a lot of the right things in getting the vaccine going and creating partnerships with private industry for PEE, he couldn't keep that mouth of his shut. He HAD to do something, God forbid he just stand there and look Presidential. So he made the pandemic a political issue by refusing to address the nation and tell them to socially distance and wear masks. Then he proceeded to ignore the recommendations of his own task force the entire time.
And two weeks before he was to leave office, he insights a riot on the capitol building. He did more damage to himself there than any Dem could dream of doing. Not with that 20-25% of the population that worship him, but with that moderate 20% of people that decide who wins elections. He'll never win the Republican nomination again with that over his head. He's done and is more unelectable than Hillary could dream of being.
Just keep him bottled up in the White House and send him packing on the 20th...

I believe that Trump is a clear and present danger to the country. I also think he should be on federal death row for what he did. But you'll never see him convicted for it. He'll say whatever, and not accidently, he told his followers he'd be there with them and he literally went in the opposite direction back to the White House. FAR better for the left to keep up the talk about what he did and say that for the good of the country that we just need to let him go. NOW, whenever Trump runs that mouth, he can be dismissed as a traitor that got a break and not a man wronged by the left.

Well, I understand the point you're making but I respectfully disagree. This was a seditious coup attempt. Inaction will encourage more of these events in the future.

I was thinking the same thing. I see calls to impeach Trump for this. While I understand that, my question is simply this - is there sufficient time to go through that process before he leaves office? Or would it just be for show? What was the timeline on the last one?

IMO the politicians wanting to impeach Trump are really just doing it for show. Not for the good of the country.

I suspect Pence is thinking the same thing re the 25th. It may take longer to get the cabinet on board than they have left. Especially since a lot of the cabinet has resigned.

I've never really liked Trump but I did like him just a bit better than the other candidates. I don't know that he MEANT for this to happen, but it did happen.

If you invoke the 25th or try to impeach, I have a feeling it will just encourage more of what we saw this week. It will incite a mob. They need to threaten him with legal recourse for the remainder of his days if he doesn't toe a line and button his sh*t up for a peaceful transition. He should be all over social media, the news, youtube, smoke signal, morse code etc telling the world that he is moving on while encouraging peace and harmony.

If he can't do that, then Pence should do it for him

I agree with this. It's time for the adults in the room to ground him. We need to get past this ugly period in America. Kudos to Biden for apparently telling people he doesn't support impeachment and just wants to get to work

I was with you until I read @PontificatingUnifex 's point below about preventing him from running again. I am sure many republicans would be for impeachment if it meant no trump for the 2024 primaries. With all of the legal issues he will be facing, he likely knows that his best option to avoid prison will be to delay and get reelected as president. Sadly, I would not put it past republicans to elect him again.

I love Joe, but he's wrong on this. There has to be accountability. There will be a next time. Hawley, Cruz, and Cotton are already trying to become the next Trump, let along Don Jr. We cannot just let a president try to stage a violent coup and get away without accountability. If we do that, we're begging for the next Trump to try the same thing.

I hear you,but it would be so much more effective for republicans to do something. I just fear anything that's done now will seem political and not do much. Cruz is a moron, Hawley really hurt himself on Wednesday, and I really think most the country has list the appetite for more Trump.

I really hope we can 4 years of relative civility to remind people what we've been missing.

I'd much prefer that Republicans show some spine and do the right thing. But you and I know that will never happen.

Cruz and, especially, Hawley, should be expelled from the Senate.

Impeachment with removal takes him off the table for 24....for that reason alone they should do it.

25th is the fastest approach but there are issues. I saw an explanation on it last night. If it was right, the process would be in section 4 of the 25th amendment. The majority of the cabinet would have to determine that Trump is unfit for office. If that occurs, Pence becomes the president immediately. Trump then has 4 days to respond. If he declares he is able to execute the office (he would) then Congress would have to vote on it.

Congress has 21 days to vote on the issue, during which Pence remains president. For those playing at home, that means that they could keep Trump out of office until January 31 if they did it today.

But there is a sticky wicket - a lot of the cabinet has resigned and there are quite a few "acting" cabinet members. Nobody is quite sure if an acting member has a vote in this or not. And Pence likely knows the 'temperature of the room' regarding the cabinet.

Good explanation into some of the details:

I was with you until I read @PontificatingUnifex 's point below about preventing him from running again. Sadly, I would not put it past republicans to elect him again.

Question - could they vote impeachment AFTER he leaves office? I kinda doubt it but that might be the best option. It takes the politics out of it - at least partially. More likely to get more Republicans on board.

Plus - to keep it from being a complete "kangaroo court" and have any teeth, there would have to be a fair hearing. Not sure if there is enough time for that, honestly.

For those who are keeping score, I was not in favor of the previous impeachment because it was obviously purely politically motivated. But this one I would support. If for no other reason than I don't want Trump on the ticket in 2024.

And as a preemptive strike, anyone who wants to give me a ton of shvt about "we told you so" etc, just save it.

The Senate doesn’t appear to want to do anything he’s already got his lap dog Lindsey back under his wing decrying the evil big tech. It’s amazing how corrupt and spineless Graham is.
