TigerIllustrated.com recently hit the AAU circuit to check in with a number of Clemson’s basketball recruiting targets.

In the second installment of this series, we take a look at Kansas City (Mo.) Barstow forward Jeriah Horne:

PROFILE

Height: 6-6
Weight: 220
Rivals ranking: Unranked (three-star)
Offers: Clemson, DePaul, Kansas State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Rutgers, South Florida, West Virginia, Wichita State

RECRUITING BUZZ

Horne’s profile has started to take off over the last month. He owned mostly mid-major offers until Kansas State pulled the trigger in early June, and he has taken off from there.

Eight schools have offered following his play in the last two tournaments for KC Run GMC, with Clemson making its move after cross-checking its evaluation at the Under Armour All American Camp in Charlotte, N.C., last week.

There is some thought that the regional teams in the mix might be stronger contenders – Kansas State, Wichita State and Creighton foremost among them.

But his recruitment might be dependent upon what caliber offers come in through this month, and which of those suitors demonstrate the most interest.

TI SPOTLIGHT

This observer has admitted to quickly developing a prospect crush upon checking out Horne for the first time last week, invoking the comparison to do-it-all NBA combo forward Draymond Green. A quick Google search reveals that we weren’t the first to draw that parallel, and here’s betting we surely won’t be the last.

Horne’s profile has no doubt suffered because of his build. He’s not the sleek slasher many teams idealize at the 3, nor does he possess the height or length to necessarily project as a stretch 4 or power forward.

But Horne makes an impact on every game he’s in, plays high-IQ winning basketball and does so many things sufficiently well.

Offensively he has 3-point range and a smooth stroke, demonstrating the ability to put the ball on the floor and hit jumpers when bigger defenders are forced to sag. He moves well without the ball and consistently scores inside when marked by smaller defenders, utilizing turnaround jumpers and a spin move to his right shoulder. In an era where ball movement is paramount, he’s an interchangeable piece within an offensive framework.

Likewise, while he’s not a jump-out-of-the-gym athlete, his versatility on defense carries substantial value. He possesses the agility to defend perimeter players along with the bulk and tenacity to bang with interior forwards. Horne is someone you feel comfortable switching pick-and-rolls with, even early in the shot clock - a la a Jared Dudley, per se.

In four UA All-America camp games, he averaged 14.3 points on 63.3 percent shooting, making 18 of 21 from the foul line (85.7 percent). He also finished sixth at the camp in rebounding (7.2) and eighth in steals (1.5).

Clemson is still early in its courtship with Horne, and several factors will ultimately dictate how far the process advances for them over the next two months.

But there’s a lot to love about Horne’s game, and he’s the most attractive candidate we’ve seen among those under consideration at his position.

QUOTABLE

“Recruiting’s starting to pick up a lot more since the beginning of the period. K-State, Iowa State and Tulsa have been coming at me hard.”

“I started hearing from Clemson a week or two ago. They have been on me hard since then. They said they wanted to have their coach come see me and then they’d get back to me afterwards.”

“(Richie Riley) was talking about the ACC and it being the best conference. That would be a good opportunity for me if I wanted to play against the best of the best.”

“I spoke (last night) with the Clemson head coach, and he informed me that he was extending an offer my way. He told me that he was very impressed with my skill level and ability to play inside and out. I’m excited to have received an offer from my first school out of the ACC and appreciate their interest in me.”

“Right now, I’m really interested in anyone who’s interested in me. I’m not going to sit back and evaluate anything until the end of July because I still have three more tournaments. So I want to see who all I can get interested in me.”
