Its like MacGregor said the eastern region of Ukraine is historically Russian territory and most of its inhabitants speak Russian and consider themselves russian along with the natural resources in the ground there is why Putin decided to take it.

So if he just wanted far eastern Ukraine, why did he attempt to invade Kyiv? Truth is, he wanted all of Ukraine and thought he could win relatively quickly.
He has probably fallen back to a position where he wants eastern Ukraine, Crimea and a land bridge connecting the two. There are more people who identify as Russian in eastern Ukraine than the rest of the country, but it is not “most.”
Regardless of his motivations and changing goals, it doesn’t make the invasion, the senseless loss of life, the abhorrent treatment of civilians or anything Putin is doing okay.

IMO Putin thought the rest of the world would sit this one out. So far he is right militarily. But he underestimated how damn hard it is to defeat an enemy on their own turf. History is repleat with examples of this (American Revolution, American Civil War, WWII, Vietnam, Russian invasion of Afghanistan) but Putin didn't learn from history. Putin also misjudged how much support Ukraine would get internationally
