Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith four-star safety commitment Sherrod Covil reached out this morning.

Covil wanted to let everyone know that he remains a Tigers pledge after Brent Venables' departure.

"I needed time to process it all," Covil told me. " Coach V was that guy when you’re talking about Clemson’s defense. Built a strong relationship with him and he was the coach that offered me.

"To see him leave was hard. I asked myself why Clemson and nothing changed except one person was gone. I didn’t base my decision off of one person or thing, so I remain all-in."

Rivals.com regional analyst Adam Friedman cited a source yesterday suggesting that Covil would stick with Clemson.

Covil told us that Dabo Swinney will conduct his in-home on Thursday.

UNC, Georgia, Virginia Tech and Michigan were the most significant schools to reach out to him to see if they could get in the door. UNC of course had him on campus this fall and has the Virginia ties, while Virginia Tech has a new staff in place that should present more of a challenge to suitors looking to raid the state.
