My dad is in the same general business, from Texas. One of my good friends at Clemson's dad, from Mississippi, was as well. 2 independent people from one another who were both self-built from nothing and wildly successful.
Both said the same thing and this was circa 2008 and long before he was president. It popped back into my head when I kept hearing how great of a businessman he was when he was/is running for office.
(paraphrasing) He has a lot of liquid assets, mainly businesses, and not much actual cash. He survives on the profit his businesses make. He's filed for bankruptcy on failed businesses, that have lost him A LOT of money, more than he has successful businesses. Now, he is a PR wizard with his NIL, so you only hear about his successful businesses. Basically he's all about the brand.

He would be worth more money if he took his inheritance and just invested in the s&p 500. His only successful venture has been a tv game show. One thing he is an expert on is bankruptcy and screwing over his investors and vendors. He usually does fine but everyone else walks away with nothing.

I don't. I know he inherited A LOT of money but don't know how much that is. He could also be financing vs paying cash and he always has investors put up some % (numbers I wouldn't be privy too) which would change things. I also have no idea what he claims to have
With 0 research, Google, Wikipedia, says he inherited ~415 million. I'm fairly certain he has less than that now including assets. As @PrimeIsGettingComfortable mentioned, he'd have been more successful (at least richer) to do nothing other than invest in index funds.
He has a fabulous home ib Palm Beach that was owned by the Post Cereal heiress. However, the only way that he can afford it is by taking in boarders. Some prople believe the he makes living as a real estate developer. From 2004-2017 he cleaned up by being a celebrity with The Apptentice. It was very lucrative, but I would not want to be a venfor or business partner with him.
