The problem is with USAID's status as an independent agency. Given all the BS that is being uncovered that has been going on for YEARS, it is not something from last budget cycle that just needs a bit of tweaking. Blow it up, bring that entire budget under the State Department so that you have unity of purpose. The only way to ENSURE that is through control of where the money goes and a clear direct-line reporting structure to the entity/person who executes foreign policy for the executive branch... the Secretary of State.
The economic power of the US is a very effective tool, and should and will continue to be used. Getting rid of USAID is just the first step to bringing those activities under control and making them more visible and actually more directly responsible to the real will of the people. It will re-emerge, in smaller form as a function within the dept of state.
I guess there is room to criticize how it is being done, but the concept and the end result (less corruption, smaller amount of gov't overhead, more judicious and effective use of taxpayer funds I think should be something that everyone could and should get behind. More efficient government!
Are people really going to dig in and die on the hill that a Transgender Opera in Colombia actually does anything for the US taxpayers? I'm sure some people will, but I can't see how Joe Public would support.
