Wherever my RV is parked(formerly Abbeville, SC)
Yesterday my next door neighbor had his palms trimmed for the dormant season. I only know the following info because I was approached to have the same services to be provided on my property. I declined. We talked while the cleanup was being done by his cleanup crew.

Three (3) years ago he had 4 trucks/crews working 40-55 hours a week (OT). He had a home in an upper mid income area that I know well here in Northern Jacksonville.

His cleanup crew was his wife and his two (2) children that are both less than 10 years old. Neither go to school.

They live in their Tahoe with a rack for his tools on top.

I gave him some bucks but would never employ him because he's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

WE LET THIS HAPPEN.

Back in the day, people trimmed their OWN trees. Now, there are two classes...the people that get their trees trimmed and those that do the trimming.

Yes, we did let this happen. But I have a strange feeling we will completely disagree on who is at fault.

My Dad has passed away and his ashes would come back together to form a fist and punch my in the mouth if I ever paid someone to do something I was capable of myself. I will not tackle anything that I know I should not do but things like cutting grass. Using a chain saw. Basic home things. I will do myself.

Sorry, he let this happen!!! Don't blame society because his kids don't go to school. That's on the parents!! There's a whole lot of generalization going on here.

Geez, I pay people to mow my lawn, trim my trees and mulch my gardens. I live on about 3/4 acre. They can cut the grass in about 15 mins while it used to take me 3 hours on the tractor. I thought I was contributing to a better economy by sharing my wealth with hard-working people but according to the poster above I am just a lazy American who is helping the country fall apart.

Shit Brother..."We the People" are at fault. You want to disagree with that?

Yup!! You make your own breaks. It's so easy to sit around and blame someone else because you're down and out.

Is he an alocholic/drug addict that ran his business into the ground?

Are people cash strapped, trying to cut back, and doing their own yard work?

Are illegal immigrants undercutting his prices?

Why are his kids not in school?

No clue what you are implying here.

Then you'd be obtuse.
I'm not being obtuse ..but what did we do to cause this guy to be using child labor etc and living in a tahoe? I mean he's owns a. Tahoe so maybe he made some bad choices fo a small business .

Are you going for outsourcing caused a population change in the middle of.the country because the lack of manufacturing ?

It's not as clear as.you seem to think .

I can fix anything inside or outside my house with two tools... my check book and a pen . How else am I going to have time to fish for likes on ti when I work all day?

Nobody over 50 should climb a ladder(3 foot step ladder excepted til 70) or tree or get on a roof. I see death weekly from those who fail to heed this. More than auto accidents.

You're looking at it wrong. You pay someone else to do it for a price that you can't do it yourself for.

I think the part that stuck out to me was the fact the man had kids not in school. I will never understand that at all. I said in an earlier post I do those things myself. I am single with no kids. I have the time. Not everyone is in the same position that I am in from a time standpoint. People using small businesses help the economy. I am just too cheap to pay someone lol

All you guys are clearly dumbasses :p. This post is an allegory (which I can not even spell).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The guy and his family cutting the palms clearly represents Syracuse. A once prosperous program that has fallen on hard times.

The homeowner is Clemson, graciously agreeing to pay the guy for doing some chores. The OP represents the fan base.

The REAL America represents the REAL Football conference (the SEC) that is dying b/c Clemson is #1.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately this post represents the "PG" version of the tale, leaving out the part where the homeowner waits until after the job is done, lures the guy and his family inside with promises of left over Halloween candy, viciously gang rapes them, and leaves them tied up and naked inside the local domed sports arena. You'll have to wait until Saturday to see the full uncut version. It's going to be ugly... NC-17 for sure.

Full props to the OP for his football related story.

Lol. Confusing thread is confusing.

I pay someone to do all our lawn stuff. Not sure why this is suddenly such a disgrace. Everyday we chose to trade time for money or money for time. When it comes to spending several hours at DIY yard maintanace, I'll trade money for the time back all the time.

Until more realize this, of course myself included, it will never change.

Brilliant analogy and saved the thread!

My dad was an International Harvester dealer. When I was 12 years old he gave me a Cub Cadet riding lawn mower, the first lawn tractor, and told me go to work. At one time I had 30 yards to do every two weeks. I swore when I grew up and was financially able I would never mow another blade a grass. I'll be 70 years old in July. Ain't cut a blade of grass since I was 40 years old. Ain't going to either.

Lord Almighty. My point was I met a family that lives out of a car going door to door trimming palms to eat. His story was he had owned a company and a nice home and lost it all. I could give a fvck less about child labor, doing your own GD work or wtf else. Perhaps some other TI member could further hijack the post and discuss UFO's or ISIS in Paris.

kg

if you subcontract them to work for you,

do you pay or do they charge you a fee that supports small business?

then good for you

but i think both of you are right

illegal immigrants, (policy of george bush during a state of war leaving borders open)

are the single most destroyer of small business in america

they worked for beer, didnt pay taxes, and our OWN american citizens TOOK ADVANTAGE of that cheap labor

character counts but not when it comes to saving a buck or two

especially during a state of war

guess thats why we need governance- men judge their own character by what helps their pocketbook

At first I could not figure out why your neighbor would pay to have his palms trimmed if he was living in a Tahoe.
I think the problem here is your initial subject is your neighbor but then you switched to talking about the guy trimming the trees without identifying him as your subject.

The other main issue here is that we have no idea why the guy lost his business. He could have done poor quality work, ripped people off, treated his employs poorly, paid his employees to much, bought new trucks when he should have have bought used, been on drugs, gambled his money away, got sued by an injured employee, had his prices set to high, etc. It is very hard for me to sympathize with someone or to take blame for the guy losing his business without any background info. There are a lot of people out there struggling trying to run a business who do not have what it takes to run a business and would be better off working as an employee for a competitor.

So why not just post .. came across a sad story a guy lost his house and business was doing anything he could to try and feed his family. Not sure how you can't figure out that the "real middle America is dying" and "we did this" histrionic nonsense" is why no one could figure out what in the literal fvk you were talking about. In fact you put that part in bold.
