When did Clemson become anti-religion and free speech?

I agree with the comment below the story. There was more to it than just prayer.

saw this on fox news this morning

crazy some moron from clemson said that clemson has free speech zones and areas where free speech is prohibited.

cant believe he said that on national television.

bottom line is guy didnt check in as a visitor.

but i was surprised to hear a university spokesman state that there are areas that free speech are prohibited.

Please banish this heinous thread to The Roundtable!!

It's game week for cry'n out loud.
This is much more important than football for crying out loud! You start paying my membership fees and then I might listen. Until then take a back seat.

I am more sorry that you have a pathetic existence of a life.

OP doesn't understand this is to keep the Mooselums from laying their mat down in a hallway and facing Mecca.

You're right. I seemed to have missed that. I guess that makes it ok!? I guess discrimination is a good thing in your book.

That's one of the most stupid comments I've ever seen on here. Somehow your membership fee is related to the topic at hand? Get a clue.

I guess the point went entirely over your head?! You realize the general theme is free speech. Let me know if you still don't get it. I will get my 10 year old on here to explain it for you.

I pretty sure you are not allowed to set-up an area and solicit prayers, donations, yell through a loud speaker, sells newspapers, etc on campus without first registering as a visitor.

Not sure if this policy violates free speech rights or not, but I doubt it does.

Free speech isn't the right to do whatever you want wherever you want.

I am pro free speech and pro-prayer. That said, it irks me to see extreme political websites trying to stir up trouble with the readers who actually read their conspiracy theories and embelished reports or unreasonable articles because they don't have the ability to make a reasonable interpretation of the facts. This is much to do about nothing. It's ridiculous and sad that anyone would read that and get bent out of shape.

The person organizing this prayer event didn't follow campus policy and did not register with the university first nor did they follow the university policy on appropriate places where they are allowed to excercise their "free speech".

It's absolutely reasonable to restrict places where people can organize and have these types of things AFTER they have registered and received approval to be on campus from the university for obvious reasons. An extreme example would be on the 50 yard line of death valley on game day. Should some organization be allowed to set up there if they simply chose to in the interest of free speech? Of course not. It would disrupt and infringe on the rights of others to allow it. It's the same reason they wouldn't be allowed to set up in the middle of a road that has not been blocked off first by authorities. Likewise, if someone wanted to set up in a high traffic walk area on campus, like in front of the cross walk in front of the library, they shouldn't be allowed there either, or in front of other high traffic areas where they can disrupt. That's why there are designated areas for this sort of stuff.

The university did absolutely nothing wrong here. This man did not register and did not set up in an appropriate place. Why are you or anyone complaining about this? This is the kind of over-embellished story that gets reported on lunatic websites and gets the crazies riled up and leads to folks voting for the type of lunatic candidates we see getting votes in this country.

Let me guess. If the article had been from MSNBC then it would have been legit? In case you haven't noticed, there is no such thing as unbiased news these days. It puts a premium on thinking for yourself. I know it takes more effort. But you should try it!

If these guys want to register as visitors and set up on Library Bridge where people expect unwanted solicitation, that's fine. If actual students want to post up and pray in the grassy area by Fort Hill without "look at me" signs, that's fine too.

This isn't a cut and dry free speech issue. This is a glorified blog fishing for clicks.

I don't watch MSNBC so I don't care. I also didn't question whether the events happened because it doesn't matter. I did not question whether the story was legit. Also, I didn't have to go to any other place to read anything. I just used basic common sense and reasoning to determine that it was a story about nothing.

I read the article you posted on the site you posted and made an informed decision that it was crappy journalism to get small minded people who can't think and reason riled up with a story about nothing. That story would have never been printed by any legit news source. Again, it was printed to get a lot of people who have poor analytical and reasoning skills bent out of shape over nothing.

Is it discrimination or separation of church and state? It really doesn't matter to me what you call it I'm for it. All religions are equally retarded and have no place at a publicaly funded university outside of private meetings such as the FCA.

I'll gladly get off your lawn now.

At this point I'm pretty sure your 10 year old has superior reading comprehension and would provide a more cogent argument than you are. We welcome his or her response.

OP, this looks like solid discussion material for the Main Board. Please post over there, including your personal thoughts on the matter, and keep us updated on how it goes.

I pray before every game. I sit in my truck in lot 2 and pray. No one's business what I am doing and no one is aware. Will do so this year.

This isn't new. When I was a student from 2003-2007, it was the same way. There are areas on campus designated for this type of thing and have been for a long time. Just because it made the news doesn't make it new.

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
