Hope everyone has a great weekend! Getting closer to kickoff Go Tiger's!

First a shout out to my friends from Georgia on the release of their new song today.

The Yardbirds released their LP "Over, Under, Sideways Down" on Aug. 8, 1966. The album had been released as "The Yardbirds" (better know as 'Roger The Engineer") in the UK. The original American versions of this album had a completely different album cover and name as the song "Over Under Sideways Down" was already a hit in the states. The US version omitted the songs "The Nazz Are Blue" (which was sung by Jeff Beck) and "Rack My Mind." Record collectors have sought out both the mono (LN 24210) and stereo (BN 26210) versions since several tracks are featured with slight differences in the mixes

The album was reissued in 1983 by Epic. It was titled "The Yardbirds", featured the original UK album cover, the two missing tracks, duplication of the British mixing, and two additional tracks, the 1966 single "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" b/w "Psycho Daisies", both featuring Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

They just don't make records like this anymore. (We know there are some great new records out there today, but for us old-er people, records like this defined our generation).

Happy 55th US Birthday to "Over, Under, Sideways Down"!! How many of you have this record with this cover?

One of the most famous photographs in the history of the world was taken 52 years ago today.

Photographer Iain MacMillan had a photo session on Aug. 8, 1969. On that day he shoots the cover for what would be the Beatles' last recorded album, "Abbey Road." The session took place just outside the studios of the same name where the band recorded most of its classic songs. The photo merely shows the band crossing the street while walking away from the studio.

The shoot only lasted ten minutes, and Ian only took six shots, from which Paul picked the cover.

It may not be the most famous album cover of all time, but we would think it has to be in the top 3. What other LP's would you choose?

Happy 52nd Birthday to the "Abbey Road Album Cover Photo".

52 years ago today, it was easy to tell the 5th Beatle. It was an old white VW Bug, first registered on April 10th 1968, with the number plate LMW 28IF. It was the Volkswagen Beetle that was parked on the street when The Beatles were photographed for the cover of their "Abbey Road" album.

It's appearance in the picture was a total accident, as it belonged to one of the people living in the apartment across from the recording studio, and couldn't be moved out of the picture because the owner was away on holiday. Rumor has it that after the album came out the number plate was repeatedly stolen from the car.

The 'Lennon' Beetle as displayed in the VW Autostadt, Wolfsburg Museum is a UK registered (10-04-68) 1968 'Lotus White' 1500 model - the same car as seen parked in the famous 1969 'Abbey Road' album cover. The car is currently on display at the Volkswagen museum in Wolfsburg, Germany.

The Museum plaque states 'Starting in 1962 John Lennon and Paul McCartney conquered the world with the music of the Beatles. They unleashed enthusiasm that continues unabated to this day. In 1967, John Lennon ordered this 1300 Beetle, license number LMW 281F and used it for daily transportation. In 1969 this particular Beetle became world famous when it appeared on the cover of the Abbey Road album and gave rise to months of rumours of Paul McCartney's death because of the license number 281F. It was acquired by VW at an auction in the summer of 1999'.

The car was owned by a nearby resident of Abbey Road at the time of the photo-shoot (August 8, 1969) and never by John Lennon.

Pete Gent, proprieter of 'The Music Department' musical instrument shop in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, came across the very famous car standing in a car showroom forecourt one day during 1986. Pete promply bought it - realising that the car salesman had no idea of the history of the car or the license plate.

So there is the story behind the 5th beetle….. well at least 52 years ago today.

Does this settle the '5th Beatle' argument?

It was 4 years ago today that we lost Glen Campbell. He was 81 years old.

Glen was a musician's musician. He was part of The Wrecking Crew studio musicians, he played with The Beach Boys for a while, he was in a couple movies and had his own TV show and countless hits.

RIP Glen. Thank you for the music. Here is one of our favorites by Glen.

(We, The College of Rock and Roll Knowledge need to put a disclaimer on this post. In no way are we trying to glorify, promote or say nice things about the people who committed this crime. This is part of Rock and Roll history. Not one of the better moments, but one of the people involved thought The Beatles were talking to him. The Beach Boys were involved. It is just history. Please do not accuse us of trying to make a monster famous)

Charles Manson wanted to be a Rock and Roll star. At one point he was talking with record producer (and Doris Day's son) Terry Melcher because Manson and his 'family' had met and moved into The Beach Boys Dennis Wilson's house in LA. Terry passed on recording / producing Manson.

Early in the morning on Aug 9, 1969, Manson sent some of his family to Melcher's house. Terry did not live there anymore. (One of Melcher's past room mates in that house was Paul Revere & The Raiders' singer Mark Lindsay). The home was now occupied by actress Sharon Tate and her husband Roman Polanski. On Aug. 9. Polanski was in Europe and Sharon had some friends over.

Manson wanted to start the 'final race war'. The 60's were coming to a violent end 52 years ago tonight. How many of you remember hearing about this when it happened? And you know we have to ask, did any of you ever meet any of 'the family'?

RIP to Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojcieh Frykowski and Steven Parent.

It's been 26 years now.

The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia passed away on Aug. 9, 1995.

It just doesn't seem possible that it has been that long.

What is the first song that comes to your mind when you hear Jerry's name?

RIP Capt. Trips. Return If Possible. A lot of people would like that very much.

It was 52 years ago this morning that the Manson Family crimes occurred at 10050 Cielo Dr. in LA. Of the 5 people who lost their lives that morning, the least known was Steve Parent. Steve was visiting William Garretson who was the groundskeeper for the property and lived in the guest house.

As we are sure many of you are aware, the prior renter of the house was record producer Terry Melcher. Terry had a room mate at the house, Mark Lindsay, who was the lead singer for Paul Revere and The Raiders. Mark and Terry wrote The Raiders hit "Good Thing" on the piano at that house.

Below is a promo picture that Paul Revere and The Raiders took on the staircase at the guest house at Cielo when Mark lived there. The other picture was take 52 years ago today.

Most of you will probably remember the band "Chase". They were a 'horn' band led by Bill Chase who was a well known trumpet player. They had a hit with the song "Get It On" in the early 70's.

The band had a show scheduled for Aug. 9, 1974 at the Jackson County Fair in Minnesota. Bill and a couple of the band members decided to take a plane to the show. The plane, a chartered twin-engine Piper Twin Comanche never made it there. Bill was killed along with the pilot and a female companion, Chase keyboardist Wally Yohn, drummer Walter Clark, and guitarist John Emma.

If you ever had the chance to see Chase, you knew the amount of power that they delivered on stage.

RIP to all. Remember this?

The song "Eye of the Tiger" almost never happened....

Earlier today, we did a story about the tragic lose of Bill Chase and a couple members of his band "Chase" in an airplane crash 46 years ago today. There is more to the story….

We are pretty sure you all are familiar with the band "Survivor" (just think "Eye Of The Tiger etc.) Survivor was put together by songwriting legend Jim Peterik. Jim first achieved fame as the lead singer and guitarist of The Ides Of March with their huge hit "Vehicle". Jim became friends with Bill Chase, wrote songs for the band and would go on stage with the band every now and then.

In this video, Jim tells the story. He first mentions Chase at about 7:30 in and then tells how the name "Survivor" came to be and why it fit. Great video and great true story. Well worth spending a few minutes…

How many of you ever saw The Beatles live in concert?

Well for those of you who didn't, the faculty here at The College of Rock and Roll Knowledge figures you might be lucky. You probably grew up normal.

OK, sorry for that BUT!!!! According to this video from Aug of 1964, Cincinnati Juvenile Court Judge Benjamin Schwartz, if you didn't see the outrage that was called The Beatles, well you're lucky.

Thoughts?

Probably the most famous flute player in the history of Rock, Jethro Tull's frontman, Ian Anderson is celebrating his 74th birthday today.

Ian started playing the flute just a couple of months before Tull recorded their first album. Ian was playing electric guitar and one day realized he was never going to as good as Eric Clapton, so he figured he'd have a go at the flute.

We have had the pleasure to work with Ian on many occasions and he is without a doubt in the top 3 people we have ever worked with.

If you were at Ian's birthday party tonight and he said he would play you just one song, what song would you ask for?

Happy Birthday Ian!!!!
