THE LATEST WE ARE HEARING
By: Larry Williams

The schedule for both Clemson and Florida State has an opening for Dec. 12, so theoretically this game could get played after all.

But it's hard for us to envision a theory that includes Clemson making a return trip to Tallahassee this calendar year.

Let's just say the crew for the charter flight back to Clemson later today won't need to turn on the heat.

There will be enough steam emanating from the head coach to heat the whole cabin.

Foul language is almost always a no-no around Clemson's program. This morning probably presented an exception when Dabo Swinney heard that the medical personnel between the two teams could not come to an agreement about playing the scheduled game.

We are told this started percolating last night when one of Clemson's backup offensive linemen tested positive for COVID. Clemson, by then in Florida, managed the situation and was sending the player home. In addition, precautions that had already been in place to separate position groups during the trip meant none of the other offensive linemen were subject to contact tracing.

Florida State, already down to 57 scholarship players, is thin on the defensive line. The alleged concern from FSU's medical staff was that the Seminoles were putting themselves in further danger by facing a group of Clemson offensive linemen who'd theoretically been around the infected player.

The Seminoles representatives were concerned further COVID infections could put them in jeopardy of canceling their next two games (at home against Virginia, and at Duke).

We are told FSU's position was dictated strictly by the Seminoles' medical staff, and that Mike Norvell nor anyone in the school's administration had anything to do with this game getting postponed.

But if you want to take the cynical route and believe FSU never even wanted to play this game and was using the contact-tracing thing as an easy out, we're not going to object.

Oh, by the way: The price tag for Clemson's entourage to take a trip to Tallahassee and back for nothing is somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000.

Swinney is declining to give a statement on the matter, deferring to his AD and the ACC.

Probably a good thing, because his thoughts would probably begin and end with "%@&*#."
