NIL has destroyed this year’s UNC basketball team in my opinion. They were in the final game last year, returned the same core players minus Manek for Nance which is a net loss, but tons of returning talent and they are likely going to miss the tournament this year after being a runaway preseason #1.
Last Sunday Armando Bacot was on the cover of the NYT Magazine with the headline “Mando the NIL Mogul,” and it’s rumored he’s making $1.2M from NIL and driving a 100k car. They probably have a few others making good money and it’s making them complacent and not hungry, and it’s literally destroying their team. I don’t buy the “they were never that good and just got hot at the right time last year” argument. That team is stacked and f-ing sucks this year. NIL at its finest.
