UGA receiver Colbie Young suspended after arrest

Georgia receiver Colbie Young suspended after arrest

By: Mark Schlabach and Chris Low - ESPN.com

Georgia coach Kirby Smart said Wednesday that wide receiver Colbie Young has been suspended indefinitely from the team following his arrest early Tuesday morning on misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child.

Smart said he met with Young on Wednesday morning.

"He's been suspended indefinitely until this legal matter is resolved," Smart said on the weekly SEC coaches teleconference. "We can't really comment any further on the specifics of it, but I had a good meeting with him this morning. We're committed to continuing to educate our players and do the best job we can of making sure they understand the serious nature of these incidents.

"It's very unfortunate, but we want to be responsible in decision-making on and off the field. This is obviously a really tough situation."

Young, from Binghamton, New York, was booked into the detention center at 4:18 a.m. ET and released later Tuesday on $3,800 bond. Young is at least the eighth Georgia football player arrested in 2024, although three of those players -- Trevor Etienne, Smael Mondon and Sacovie White -- either pleaded down or had their driving-related charges dismissed.

Young played two seasons at Miami before joining the Bulldogs in December.

According to an Athens-Clarke County Police incident report obtained by ESPN, a 20-year-old woman, who described herself as Young's ex-girlfriend, told police that she went to his apartment around 12 a.m. ET Tuesday to discuss their relationship.

When the conversation became heated after she discovered he was on the phone with another woman, the complainant said Young "grabbed her left arm near her biceps and triceps and physically pulled her out of his room." The woman said Young was "using derogatory terms and being demeaning of her." She said Young went back to his room and locked the door.

The woman told police she started to collect her belongings when a friend called her phone. When she answered, the woman told police, "Mr. Young came out and grabbed her from behind. She said that he picked her up and began to squeeze her torso and abdomen very hard. She said she felt like [Young] was trying to harm her."

The officer noted in the report that he observed a bruise and discoloration on the bottom of the woman's chest where it meets the abdomen and redness on her right side. The police officer transported the woman to an Athens hospital for treatment.

When the officer interviewed Young, he said he escorted the woman to his front door when the conversation became contentious and denied grabbing her. When the officer asked how the woman suffered her injuries, Young said "it wasn't from him."

"Colbie Young was arrested last night after he asked his ex-girlfriend to leave his apartment," Kim Stephens, Young's attorney, told ESPN on Tuesday. "He did not make physical contact with her in any way that could ever be considered a crime. I expect Mr. Young to be fully exonerated once our investigation is complete and the truth revealed."

The senior receiver had 11 catches for 149 yards with two touchdowns in the No. 5 Bulldogs' first five games. He had three receptions for 51 yards in Saturday's 31-13 victory against Auburn at Sanford Stadium. Georgia coach Kirby Smart, speaking to reporters Tuesday, didn't get into the details of Young's arrest, but said the string of run-ins with the law involving Georgia players has worn on everybody associated with the program.

"When you have 130 17- to 23-year-olds, you're going to have issues," Smart said. "It's not going to be perfect. I certainly recognize we've got to do a better job, but it's hard. It's hard on our staff because we've got really good kids. We've got really good people, man, and our kids go out there, and they have one of the best practices we've had all year on a Tuesday. They're out there competing, working. You just want them to make better decisions as men off the field. And, you know, I take a lot of responsibility for that. It's tough, but that's the cost of leadership.

"You're going to be judged by the people you lead and you've got to stand up and face it and do right by the kids and keep trying to find a better way. I mean, we're constantly trying to find a better way to make a difference, and that's in everything we do in our organization."

Former Bulldogs receiver Rodarius "Rara" Thomas was dismissed from the team Aug. 1 following his arrest on multiple family violence charges. At the time, Smart told reporters, "He can no longer be part of the football team. He understands that. We wish him the best moving forward."

Thomas, a senior from Eufaula, Alabama, was charged with cruelty to children-family violence, a second-degree felony, and two misdemeanor counts of battery-family violence. His case is pending in Athens-Clarke County Superior Court, according to court records.

NCAA getting rid of National Letter of Intent program

NCAA getting rid of National Letter of Intent program
By: Adam Friedman - Rivals.com

The NCAA announced on Wednesday that the National Letter of Intent program is no more. The rules surrounding a prospect signing with a university will now fully transition to financial aid agreements.

The National Letter of Intent program, which began in 1964, was governed by the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA).

Much of the function of the National Letter of Intent will be folded into a new model. Expect recruiting rules surrounding a player signing with a university to remain in place.

According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, "Similar recruiting rules tied to the National Letter of Intent will continue with the signing of school aid agreements. They end a prospect’s recruitment. For instance, all communication with the signed prospect and family members must end, and the prospects are prohibited from signing more than one aid agreement prior to enrollment."

The current NCAA rules indicate high school players can't sign a binding financial aid agreement until Signing Day. However, with this move, like any other, there is potential for seismic structural changes to the high school recruiting process. Signing periods could be altered and a new or updated mechanism for binding commitments could open the door for a new set of legal challenges.

Wake WR Donavon Greene out this week

Donavon Greene out this week
By: Conor O'Neill - Deacons Illustrated

WINSTON-SALEM – Wake Forest is back to playing the waiting game on Donavon Greene and the best course of action is getting him to 100%.

Coach Dave Clawson said Greene won’t play this weekend against No. 10 Clemson, his second straight missed game — the lingering effects of a hamstring injury he has been dealing with for more than a month.

“It’s almost to the point where like, ‘Let’s bring him back when he’s completely, 100% healthy,’” Clawson said during his weekly news conference on Tuesday afternoon. “Because we brought him back in the beginning of the year and then he re-tweaked it. And then he played a little bit in the Ole Miss game and re-tweaked it.

“Just to bring him back 60%, 70%, 80% and lose him for three more weeks — we’re going to have some big games down the stretch.”

That was Clawson alluding to the obvious, which he talked about in the first couple of weeks; that for Wake’s offense to be at its best, it has to have the best version of Greene.

Greene missed most of fall camp. He had three catches for 72 yards and a touchdown against North Carolina A&T in the opener, and then a career-best 11 catches for 166 yards and a score against Virginia. He had one catch against each of Ole Miss and Louisiana.

That Greene is missing a home game against Clemson stings for a multitude of reasons — Wake Forest hasn’t beaten a top-10 team since 1946, and Greene had a two-touchdown game against the Tigers in a double overtime loss at then-Truist Field against the Tigers.

Redshirt freshman Micah Mays Jr. started in Greene's place at N.C. State and had the first four catches of his career, for 48 yards. His 17-yard catch on Wake's final drive set up Demond Claiborne's 3-yard touchdown run that wound up being the game-winning score.

The Deacons will also be without cornerback Travon West, who Clawson said suffered “a significant injury” in Saturday’s game.

Not all of Wake’s injury news on Tuesday was bad, though.

Cornerback Capone Blue, who started Wake’s first four games but missed the game at N.C. State, has practiced this week and is expected to play.

W. NC Devastation

North Carolina schools

I did some quick research today and discovered some interesting (yet sickening) facts about our ACC friends on the north side of the Carolina line. Since 2000

Which North Carolina school has the best bowl winning percentage?
Which North Carolina school has had the most 10+ win seasons?
Which North Carolina school has achieved the highest ranking in the CFP era?

If you'd said Wake Forest, you'd be right. Wake is 9-3 in bowls since 2000. No other NC school is even close. UNC is a pathetic 3-12. Wake has two 10+ win seasons. All the others just have 1. And Wake was ranked 9th in 2021 by the CFP and finished 17th. UNC was ranked 10th last year before finishing at 20.

NONE of the NC ACC school have a winning record in the ACC since 2000. UNC and NCS are currently tied at 91-105 record for 46%. Wake has a 38% conference win record which isn't as good as I thought they'd be.

ONLY NC State has an overall winning record at 173-154 for 56%. That annual weak OOC schedule really pays off for them.

Earlier this week, Cris asked for our impressions of the Wake program. I have a general positive opinion of Wake's program. In fact, I wondered if its not the best football school in the state of North Carolina. This is why I dug into the numbers. After looking at the numbers, I guess suggesting so is a bit of a stretch. (Though looking at the numbers since 2006 vice 2000 and Wake's winning percentages jump up significantly: with a better than .500 record overall). The wins aren't there to support that assertion. But they certainly aren't outclassed much by their public college brethren in the Triangle.

I think we can say, subjectively, that Wake Forest sucks the least of all the North Carolina schools.

Finally an arrest has been made

Man charged with murder of ex-Clemson WR Diondre Overton

By: Associated Press

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A 20-year-old man was arrested in Michigan and charged with first-degree murder in last month's fatal shooting of former Clemson receiver Diondre Overton, police in North Carolina said Tuesday.

Jeremiah Diago Blanks is believed to have slain Overton at a gathering in the former player's hometown of Greensboro last month, the Guilford County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Guilford County Sheriff Danny H. Rogers said detectives traveled to Michigan and got help from the U.S. Marshals Service in arresting Blanks.

Police did not disclose further information about Blanks or a potential motive for the slaying. He was being held in the Oakland County Jail in the Detroit suburb of Pontiac, Michigan, pending extradition to North Carolina.

Overton, 26, was found on the morning of Sept. 7 after deputies responded to reports of a loud party. He was given medical care but died at the scene.

Overton played for Clemson from 2016 to 2019 and was part of national title teams after the 2016 and 2018 seasons.

He had 52 catches for 777 yards and seven touchdowns for the Tigers.

News of Overton's death came a few hours before the Tigers' 66-20 victory over Appalachian State on Sept. 10. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney stopped to pay tribute at Overton's plaque during the team's entrance to the stadium.

"He truly was one of the sweetest, spirited kids that we've had come through here and, again, truly a great teammate," Swinney said that night.

Trump campaign grift

Encourage everyone to give this a listen.

Highlights how, in 2020, the trump campaigns sent over 500 million dollars to an entity "American Made Media Consultants" that was created by Jared Kushner in 2019, chaired by various trump kids, and had no website or clearly delineated role.

Also how Cory lewandowskis "strategy firm" took in 94+ million.

FEC won't investigate of course, because partisanship.

This is ****ed up.

I know this is beating a dead horse but the defense

Just doesn't seem to have it this year. I went back and watched the FSU game due to rising it Saturday

I don't mind the lack of pressure but we just don't seem like a physical unit this year. Way to many missed tackles and bad angles

After watching 5 games this year I think its safe to say Terrell is our most physical guy in the secondary. He tackles with an attitude. Alot of the other guys seem to just show up and try to get the guy to the ground.

Take out all the bust and poor plays in general but I like how Brown, Hanifin approach tackling and I really like the look of Jones on the backend
