Until 2015 I had always considered 1989 the best Clemson team of my lifetime (1954). In an era when a generational QB wasn’t as essential. I thought the team was better than the 1981 team.
The Duke loss was bizarre. It was a few days after Hugo. While not impacting Clemson or Durham much, it must have whacked the homes of many players in the swath from Charleston to Charlotte. And the atmosphere at Wallace Wade was surreal. Including the emergence of Randy Cuthbert. And fumbling back two interceptions along with a batting penalty costing us a fumble recovery.
I have no explanation for the GT blowout. They weren’t good, we were at home, and there were no extenuating circumstances.
Looking back 1990 and ‘91 might have been equally as talented as the 1989 team but we all know what was going on then.
