As a veteran of an actual war, I would just ask all of you to pray for peace. War sucks.
What happened on 1/6 was not an insurrection. That's such a limp take based on political control and nothing more. It was a riot. It was a disgrace. It was idiotic and unpatriotic. It was an embarrassment. But it was not an attempted coup and it was not an insurrection. Our government isn't a building and it's not a certain set of people. It's not located in a single city though so many would like to make it so. It's so much more than that. That people choose not to recognize that is a travesty but not surprising when political power over others is at stake.
Further, that the person you were responding to doesn't understand how weak and impotent this president has been is not surprising. He's just going to do whataboutisms like all people seem to do these days. Trump is a disgrace and an egomaniacal piece of garbage. Biden may be the worst president in the history of this nation. Both things can be true and we don't need to do whataboutisms to try and justify one at the expense of the other.
China is a threat but very vulnerable. Do you know about the Real Estate bubble there? Our ‘08 bubble PALES in comparison. The Chinese can’t invest in conventional vehicles like we can and it’s absurdly over valued. They are also a demographic time bomb as they aren’t replacing their aging population and it’s just a matter of time. Also a huge number of large corporations are shifting their manufacturing elsewhere seeking lower labor rates and not having to share ownership and their tech with the CCP. Pre-Covid they had a debt to GDP ratio roughly twice ours and they’ve been pumping up their currency for decades. They also can’t produce enough electricity and rely on foreign countries for vast amounts of coal. It’s so bad they can’t keep everyone’s power on reliably at all. Imo they could implode at any time.
So what country are you thinking will be invading Russia across those farmlands

Yep!!! And we're helping to fund their military a bit by relying on their oil and natural gas for import. I see where we now importing 250,000 to 300,000 barrels of oil from them. It's just seems like yesterday when we were exporting Oil and gas? Actually, the whole purpose of invading Ukraine may be just as much about agriculture as it is about NATO. Lots of Russia isn't exactly budding farmland. Ukraine is the top grain producer in Europe and their biggest buyer is......you guessed it.......Russia. Keeping NATO from having trade influence over the Ukraine specific to sanctions is where I see the driver here.
Also, lots of people discounting the importance of easy to navigate supply lines. Those that argue the game has changed only need to rewind back to Afghanistan to know that even with a superior air capability, still not straight forward to get needed supplies in country and to the front lines especially when the enemy controls three borders, it took us years to build up the stockpiles in the "Stan and most of that was only possible after we stood up Bagram AB. Terrain matters a great deal. For example, hundreds of miles from a friendly airport makes it hard to push large troop movements, tanks, missile defense, etc.
Russia controls 3 Ukraine borders so that leaves one external supply route for any friendlies willing to help them. In theory, Russia should have an easy march into Ukraine but invading a foreign country on home turf is never an easy war to fight. Russia has the most to lose here.

I’ve gone a few rounds with @areeves in the past. Objectively … I can’t with 100% certainty say he is wrong on a lot of what he says because … a lot of it is so off the wall it can’t be proven or disproven.
BUT I can say with 100% certainty that 3 commercial planes took off on 9/11 and the data from their avionics stopped in the vicinity of NYC and DC respectively. I know this because I’ve seen the ACARS data, was working the day of, and the day after and this data COULD NOT be falsified or hacked. It’s a impossibility. Lot's of interesting comments and good discussion in this thread. Lots of weird ones too. From the perspective of a guy who has been to Ukraine and worked with their military.
1. A comment was made that Ukraine is looking to the West for its long term growth. This is true. But there are also a large number of people in Ukraine who still look to Russia and their long ties there. The Russia "takeover" of the Crimea didn't happen without help. I had several incidents with Ukrainians openly showing distain for Americans while there.
2. Never forget Stalin just about starved the Ukrainians to death in '32-'33. Many Ukrainians hailed the Germans a liberators until the Germans started committing atrocities (almost immediately). I make this point only to show there is no love loss between Russia and Ukraine.
3. Russia needs the Ukraine as a food source about as much as I need to gain 10 pounds. Having flown over western Russia, the vastness is impressive. It makes the American Midwest look like Rhode Island. Ukraine is a "bread basket" and supplies grain products around the world. Now if Putin is looking for another revenue stream...that could be an angle I guess. BLUF if there is an invasion, the cost of food in third world countries will go way up.
4. Ukraine is corrupt (just like Russia). The underworld controls a lot. Not that the US hasn't befriended morally challenged countries before, but it makes it hard to take Ukraine seriously if they won't clean up their own country.
5. Other than supporting a democracy, and being a pain in the ass to Russia, I can't see a single US interest in Ukraine. There is a reason Ukraine (and Georgia) aren't NATO countries. We had an annual exercise with the Ukraine for years. Shortly after the exercise one year, Russia invaded Georgia. Georgia was about a year or two ahead of Ukraine in the application to become a NATO member. The signal was very clear to Europe, "Do you want to spend blood and treasure to defend Georgia (and Ukraine)?"
6. One has to wonder if paying off Hunter all these years is helping Ukraine now.
7. Nothing diverts a populace from its domestic problems like an international one. This crisis benefits both parties for different reasons.
8. The US imports 7% of its oil from Russia. Why? If we sanction Russia and cut those imports, this supply will have to come from somewhere else (and likely at an increased price). We get most of our oil from Canada. Damn shame we don't have like a pipeline from Canada to the US that could cheaply transport oil between our two countries.
9. The West and NATO don't have the resolve to militarily fight this fight. It'd require going All In on a pair of fours. Right now I bet NATO is sweating Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
10. So the 50 cent question is, "Will Putin invade?" Frankly, I can see it going either way. I don't see it happening soon though. I think they wait for better weather if they do. I can see them invade if they decide, "let's just strike while we can and end this problem for good," and if they aren't concerned about the West sanctions. If they invade, Ukraine will bloody them if the solider in the field has the resolve. But I can't see it taking the Bear long to take over the country. The Russian army isn't great in many respects, but it has something Ukraine doesn't: mass. I can also see Putin milking this to get the West to agree not to accept Ukraine into NATO. Also get as many concessions from the West on a wide range of issues for his "restraint." He doesn't risks sanctions this way, looks like a player on the world stage to his people (correctly so) and gets most of what he wants.

That said, I also saw a boneyard of about 50 MIGs rotting away too. They were still tied to Soviet doctrine at the time and were very ridged in their decision making. Junior officers didn't make decisions. They only carried out orders. I came away with wondering why were were ever scared of the Soviet Union. We'd have crushed their ooda loop.

Regarding point 5, could you not make a similar argument about Romania and Poland? Regarding point 8, the dynamics of the Nord Stream deal are also important, perhaps more important than any direct connection between the US and Russia as it concerns oil.
Oh I'm picking on you a little Tillman. Your choice of words is off. In the military, you have Strategic, Operational and Tactical levels of planning.
Strategic level comes from our civilian leadership. What are we trying to in a region? The US will bring diplomatic, Informational, military and economic strengths in play. In most cases, the military is supporting State Department goals for the country or region.
Operational level.....the best way to explain this is I've been given a number of military and national resources to achieve an objective. How do I position them and move them on the chess board to achieve the effect I want.
Tactical level...well that's how we as a military fight to defeat a threat.
"Routes" aren't really a term. I'm sure some Army guy here can speak to avenues of approach. At the operational level, we speak to linear and non-linear operations. We speak of Areas of Responsibility, Operation Areas, areas of influence and areas of interest. Internal and Exterior lines. Lines of operations. Principals of mass, economy of force, maneuver etc.
I'd say Romania and Poland provide a buffer between the "traditional " Western Europe and Russia. Just as many here say "no one has invaded Russia" I'd say Poland and Romania provide a similar divider between the west and reduce their influence in that direction. I'm sure Germany would prefer to face Russia in Poland than in Germany (having lived through that once.)
Yeah your comment about Nord Stream is interesting. I am sure Putin is seeking assurances that this won't be disrupted. It's certainly a card in the West's poker hand.

I agree concerning Romania and Poland. I would add though that Romania, Poland, and the Baltic States are probably not too keen on the idea of Russia establishing a puppet state in Ukraine in addition to Belarus, particularly if it’s a result of the US and the rest of NATO essentially shrugging their shoulders as it concerns Russia’s expansion into the former Eastern Bloc. If NATO is ok with ceding to Russia’s demands about who can and cannot join, I’d harbor some doubts about NATO being willing to go to war over a Russian threat on any of its non-traditional members. Is Ukraine worth the US going to war? No, but I think NATO is wise to make any Russian invasion of Ukraine as difficult as possible. To suggest that NATO shouldn’t care about Ukraine isn’t something I agree with personally, and I find the Russian suggestion that Ukraine is going to join NATO and invade Crimea to be plainly laughable.
I'd say we tell Putin that if he goes into Ukraine, we will build permanent NATO bases in Poland, Romania and the Baltic States. I believe we have some small contingents in Poland and Romania now, but I am talking basing USAF and USA units there. The Bear won't like that....especially if they are Intel collection assets. It's a good chip to play that will get his attention.
