My son is winding into his senior year ('26) and has great grades and test scores. He really wants to go to a top 50 public business school, so he's looking at places like tOSU (boo), Indiana, UGA (boo), and UNC. While I always saved enough for them to go out of state if they wanted, he seems pretty happy to go to UT in Knoxville where the Haslem Business School is number 40. After the various in-state fairly guaranteed "scholarships" that would leave me a surplus of money in his college savings accounts.

I have two accounts each for the kids, an UTMA and a 529 with 50% each in them. I'm assuming I'd just drain the 529 first? I like the UTMA tax-wise, but the drawback is it's theirs -- even if they run off and join the circus. Neither of my kids know how much or where their funds are.

Except for being smart, he's a lot like me. Not a big fan of school, so grad school doesn't seem like an option. Any thoughts from the been there / done that crowd?
