Anyone bought a new touch screen laptop lately? Any suggestions/advice?

I haven't bought a laptop in 10 years or so I feel like I've been left behind. Don't know how much I should expect to spend, how much performance/hard drive space/etc. to expect,
Mainly just serf the net, store pictures, and use word/excel/etc.
Was hoping to get something that would last for under $500.
Thoughts?
