You don’t know that what you attribute to “God” isn’t the work of a giant purple turtle. You can’t disprove it, and you have exactly the same evidence for it as you have for a personal “God.” Zero to none

Say you’re an omniscient, omnipotent being who decides to bring an entire universe into existence. This is what you settle on?
You create billions of stars and galaxies along with the laws of physics as we know them. You watch as life develops on a planet we call Earth, first from single-celled organisms, later into increasingly sophisticated and intelligent species. These species suffer brutal wave after brutal wave of starvation, extermination, and pitiless extinction. Billions of years into this cycle of life and death, humanity emerges. It too suffers for tens of thousands of years, many dying as infants, the rest left to die at the mercy of a cold world they can’t begin to understand. In spite of it all, humanity claws its way to civilization. You then make a covenant with one of its not particularly prominent tribes; as a sign of this covenant, you instruct them to cut off the foreskin of their males as infants. The females of this people are considered chattel, slavery is acceptable, and you enjoin them to commit genocide on at least one occasion. This people falls into and out of your divine favor at various points, but it eventually finds itself subjugated and dispersed by stronger peoples who reject your divinity in favor of others. Appalled by the calamitous state of humanity, you decide that the best solution is to send an incarnation of yourself to Earth that may die as a human sacrifice in an imperial backwater to atone for humanity’s inherent wickedness, abrogating the previous theological instructions given to the first group of people you made a covenant with. Large portions of the world come to accept this offered savior, but the behavior of man fails to materially improve as a result. You watch as tens of thousands are burned or drowned as witches, plague and famine kill millions more yet, slavery persists in large parts of the world throughout the 19th century, fascists attempt to quite literally exterminate what remains of your original chosen people from the face of the earth, communist regimes in Asia murder tens of millions more, and millions die in Africa from a virus whose spread is easily mitigated by the use of contraception that your church chooses to rail against. This endless cycle of violence and human suffering will continue without end until the earth itself is rendered a charred hunk of rock in the vastness of space by the expansion of the sun. Indeed, even if humanity escapes the only star we know, your laws of physics indicate that the universe itself will die, whether in the cold solitude of thermodynamic heat death or in a violent ripping apart of space time itself.
If you could not do better, you are not omnipotent. If you could do better but choose not to, you are not good.
So if we don't focus on the gun (i.e. the murder weapon), what are we supposed to focus on? Doing nothing at all and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.
How are the Feds responsible here, exactly?

I didn't say "do nothing." This kid, and the Parkland kid, were well known to authorities and yet both passed federal background checks. How about we hold authorities accountable for their own failures first. Another federal law won't stop any of this madness. Actually prosecuting and preventing known prohibited persons should be step #1. The Feds are 100% responsible for that. But see, they'd rather investigate moms and dads who speak out at school board meetings than prosecute people with known issues attempting to purchase firearms.

So why should they have both failed background checks, exactly? I honestly haven't seen anything that hints at this kid already having a criminal record. Did I miss something? If there is no criminal record, how are the feds supposed to have the necessary information? What does being well-known to authorities mean? If that is local cops, how is that information getting entered into a federal criminal database?
I didn't accuse you of saying 'do nothing.' I asked for specifics and you've provided vague generalities that don't explain how the system failed.
Both instances: the shooters were well known to authorities. In the Charleston shooting, Dylan Roof was already prohibited from purchasing but his background check came back clean for some reason. Systemic failures in all three cases.

Also, we know why Dylan Roof was able to buy a gun. There have been multiple bills introduced in Congress to close the "Charleston loophole" that can't get 60 votes in the senate
