So we know Tillman is now Old Main and Calhoun is now Clemson University HC. Clemson is next!!!!!!
When I was attending Clemson in 2017 the changing names of campus buildings were a normal debate in political type classes. I was stunned when the name Clemson was debated and was the class voted 55% to keep the name of the University as is. This decade I can see the school named after Thomas Green Clemson name being changed before the decade is done. If it passes what name do you think they could rename it. Don’t give me your emotional posts this is a future situation we will most likely experience sooner than later. What could they change it too?????

This is coming. It would be silly to think it isn't.

I get that people are looking for everything. And people get upset. Lady Antebellum changed name to Lady A. That’s prob easy fix but when u talk about taking down monuments, changing signage of military bases, changing name of a university do people realize the cost? It would be 100s millions. That money would be much better used to develop neighborhoods, provide assistance, scholarships etc to those affected groups rather than changing a name

So since this is absolutely definitely happening, probably in the next few weeks, Let’s suggest some new names for our beloved University ITT.

I’d like to suggest: Jake Fruhmorgen Tech University

I'm not positive he was a slaveowner. His wife didn't inherit the Calhoun estate until after the civil war, and he didn't move to Fort Hill until 1872. Not seeing any info on his holdings prior to that.

This is absolutely coming soon. The main issue is with the will of TGC.

It is always the amorphous “they want ...”

Next someone will accuse Antifa of leading a campaign against the name Clemson.

Folks, don’t be fooled by fear mongers. No significant effort will be undertaken to change the name of Clemson University. It is more closely associated with Clemson, SC than Thomas Green Clemson.

Relax and enjoy the moment that names honoring people who mistreated Blacks will no longer be celebrated on the campus.

good lord

Calhoun was a legislator who pushed for slavery time and time again. Has many quotes attributed to him glorifying slavery

Tillman was a POS. If you don't agree with that by now, you haven't done any research

Owning slaves in a time where most did is COMPLETELY different than pushing for an end to abolition and glorifying slavery

Clemson will not be renamed, and you are a paranoid little snowflake if you think that

Won't happen. If that was the case then you would have to rename almost all the schools in this country built before the civil war. All were probably built by slaves and all of these founders more than likely were also slave owners. This includes schools in the northeast

If you read my post maybe you would have comprehended pos.

Considering George Washington owned 127 slaves at the time of his death, we'd have a lot places to change.

It's true. some estimates were that as many as 480 resided on his estate before his death. But he insisted on riding his property fence line in bad weather himself that led to his death bed.

In his will, written several months before his death in December 1799, George Washington left directions for the emancipation of all the slaves that he owned, after the death of Martha Washington. They were freed in 1801 after Martha signed a deed of manumission for her deceased husband's slaves in 1800.

There were actually more who were dower slaves that could not be freed by law.

In accordance with state law, George Washington stipulated in his will that elderly slaves or those who were too sick to work were to be supported throughout their lives by his estate. Children without parents, or those whose families were unable to see to their education were to be bound out to masters and mistresses who would teach them reading, writing, and a useful trade, until they were ultimately freed at the age of twenty-five.

I'll bite one more time : "Big Lake University"

I can’t see that happening

Well, no disrespect to you, but I suggest you put your glasses on, because a name change is coming, or at least a MAJOR fight is on the horizon.

As far as a new name goes, it cannot be the first couple of college presidents, as they likely had slaves, or at least their fathers did. Since Clemson is an engineering and agriculture school, maybe South Carolina Tech or South Carolina A&T? Hopefully the queen of England that the name 'Carolina' was named after was not an advocate of slavery?

Not gonna happen, no sane person would even discuss it.
He gave the land.
Neither he nor I are/were perfect.

But, WOW!
How impressive is the leadership at this special University!!

Calhoun & Tillman.... Gone in a flash!
Boom!

.....well, maybe not boom

The University of South Carolina

there is no debating we are now it’s just time to make it official

Clemson University name won’t change. He founded the university. There is a huge difference between urging secession (Calhoun) and being a racist murdering thug (Tillman) and simply owning slaves when many did and it was legal. Besides the BOT has to make the decision.
