Colorado self-reported minor NCAA rules violation after Deion Sanders mentioned 5-star QB Julian Lewis on his coaches show

By: Nick Bromberg - Yahoo! Sports

Colorado self-reported a minor NCAA rules violation because a prominent member of Colorado’s 2025 recruiting class was mentioned on Deion Sanders’ coaches show.

Per records obtained by USA Today, Colorado self-reported two violations involving five-star quarterback Julian Lewis. The former USC commit flipped to Colorado in November and signed with the Buffaloes in December. But college coaches aren’t supposed to mention the names of recruits who haven’t officially signed with their school. And Sanders said Lewis’ name during a show before he officially signed with the school when he was indirectly asked about the quarterback’s commitment.

From USA Today:

Sanders then gave an example of how he recruited Lewis.
“Hey, get JuJu on the phone and get his pop on the phone,” Sanders said as an example. “See if his dad want to come down and just sit down and chop it up with me.
"He sat in my office I think a few weeks ago for a couple hours," Deion Sanders said on the show about the father. "I said, `C,mon, give it all to me because I know you’ve got a bunch of questions on your mind. Let’s go.' And we did that. And he walked away feeling really comfortable about where we’re headed."
The other infraction came when the host of a coaches show mentioned Lewis’ name in a question to Sanders before Lewis had signed.

Per the report, Colorado has added rules education for Sanders and given itself a four-day reduction in in-person recruiting during the spring recruiting period. The two shows that generated the NCAA violations were removed from YouTube and Sanders’ show will not be live-streamed on the platform going forward.

Lewis is one of the best players in the class of 2025 and a big reason why Colorado has the No. 40 high school class in the country despite having just 14 recruits signed. Syracuse is three spots above the Buffaloes with 35 total high school recruits.

The Carrollton, Georgia, native is the No. 10 player in the country and the No. 1 player in his state. He’s the No. 3 overall pro-style QB in the class of 2025 behind Ohio State signee Tavien St. Clair and Michigan signee Bryce Underwood. They are the only three five-star pro-style QBs in Rivals’ rankings.

Lewis looks set to take over as Colorado’s starter in 2026. With Shedeur Sanders heading to the NFL, Colorado added former Liberty QB Kaidon Salter for his final season of eligibility in 2025. Deion Sanders, meanwhile, looks set to stay in Boulder after any possibility of him coaching the Cowboys seems to have fizzled. Sanders has not interviewed with Dallas as the Cowboys interviewed former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer a second time on Thursday.
