--Recruiting Tristan Smith was a quick process. Two wide receivers left, and although they weren’t initially looking for a guy, their departure created a need for depth. The high school recruiting phase was over, and there wasn’t anyone else they thought they could target.

--Dabo noted that Clemson has signed a player out of the portal three of the last four years and will use it when they can’t address a need through high school. They’re currently tracking players at defensive end for a similar reason.

--They were looking for something specific, and Smith brought that. They really like his length, and Dabo thinks his best football is ahead of him.

--Smith could potentially travel with the team this weekend. There’s a process to get admitted, so it’s unclear if he’ll join them at this time. If Clemson wins, you’ll see him pretty quickly.

--Smith has one guaranteed year of eligibility left. There are waivers being granted, so there might be a process to extend it, but including his freshman year at JUCO, where he didn’t play much, he has one year left.

--They’ve been preparing for Texas OL Kelvin Banks Jr, to play after he missed the SEC Championship. Dabo says he’s “excellent”—physical, well-coached, and experienced.

--Mafah is “doing great,” had a good week in practice, and is ready to roll.

--Dabo said Sherrod Covil Jr. did everything right in terms of handling his transfer process. He came to Dabo 8-10 days before the ACC Championship to discuss it. Covil still suited up for the USC game and the championship because he wanted to finish strong. Dabo appreciated how he handled everything and hopes he lands in a good spot.

--Covil is off the roster as of now.

His comments about portal needs....big yikes. Says they needed a WR after two transfers out, so they went and got Smith. Then says they are trying to fill DE spot because of a high school decommit. Then said other than that, they are in good shape unless something happens.

So, no P, RB, LB, S??

So two portal guys. Yikes.

Gentlemen, Paul and I talked about this yesterday.

Paul also expects to be tracking portal prospects in the spring portal window (begins Apr. 16). Paul believes punter is on the table.

Not to be overly negative here, but it’s clear as day why Clemson doesn’t recruit the portal well listening to Dabo. He had zero excitement and very little positivity in general about signing Tristan. He spoke about it as if it was the last thing he wanted to do but was forced into it due to unexpected departures and they couldn’t really get the guys they really wanted so they settled for him.

I’m obviously projecting but it definitely didn’t come across as a coach being excited about making his roster better. It was the same when he talked about DE. “Had a guy decommit so we had to go and get one. We didn’t want to, but we had to do it!”

Thanks, sir. It seems we should be hoping that lower depth guys on the roster at positions of need will enter the portal, because it's pretty clear Dabo prefers the narrative to be he only uses the portal when he has absolutely no other choice. Aligns with comments he's made in the past to high school recruits.

If we don't get a punter we will probably have to hire the high school coach that doesn't punt as an analyst. Because we won't be able to anymore.

It is probably just me but it sure seems like the cringe worthy statements are more frequent than they used to be. I hope he doesn't get so frustrated by this new world of CFB that he just says forget it. If he does, I wouldn't blame him. I have to think, in hindsight, he would have framed statements from a few years ago regarding player compensation differently.

Also, is it fair to assume Dabo isn't gonna tip his hand if there's irons in the fire that aren't publicly know?
Of course. There is no upside for him to talk about what direction they're going to take. I'm actually surprised he mentioned defensive end.

Roster management is and will continue to be more fluid than ever all across college football. When a lot of players across the landscape have a more firm grasp on their roles next spring following practice, it's going to impact a lot of decisions heading into the spring portal window IMO.

Paul feels strongly punter is a direction they need to take. I agree.

We had a desperate need at DE before this season that we could not address thru high school recruiting. The head coach left it unaddressed by avoiding the portal like it is the plauge.
Yeah, when he said they didn't have a need this past year lol

Sorry, Smith can travel with the team and potentially play if we win? Is that real?

If so, that’s complete bs

I thought the rule was you can only compete for one team during a single season. I’ll be surprised if he can.

I mean all the CFP schools would be looking for impact guys or depth guys if they have injuries if they could be immediately available.

The only reason he mentioned DE is because everyone knows he’s brought the Purdue kid in for a visit. Dabo is probably the most calculated person in college football. Guy hates to lose like Jordan. It’s written all over his face. I personally think he lands Heldt and stays strong in his conviction that he loves his roster and only signs a punter to fill the other OBVIOUS glaring hole. Personally, I’d be all over adding a RB, LB and possibly a DB, but it’s not as if we haven’t recruited talent and Dabo has his finger on the pulse of his roster. He’s a fantastic CEO coach with morals and confidence in his way, which is admirable.

So two portal guys. Yikes.
you really need to get a grip; you take limited info that you get and immediately run to a worst case scenario. and you always are like that. on everything. Why don't you go over to a basketball game after the season is over... and talk to Dabo and complain to him like you do on here ALL THE TIME

Dabo’s message is simple like it or not, we are not going to allow money hungry players to disrupt Clemson football. We will invest money on current roster, on portal guys that want to be a part of our program when we need to fill gaps, and recruit high school players that want to be a part of Clemson.

Yikes when I say this out loud, but I have witness FSU get destroyed by portal, UNLV program be disrupted by a QB wanting his money leave the program at the beginning of the season.

Don’t forget Lane Kiffin having the #1 rank portal transfer class last season and is currently home watching the CFP from the couch. We do however, need to continue to take this portal thing seriously or become bottom of ACC.

I just don’t understand how they can look at our RB room and think we are fine there. It’s arguably the worst in the conference next year (in a pretty lousy conference). Our only hope is Davidson being ready “out of the box” and having a Sammy Watkins-like true freshman campaign.

I hear you. But no doubt he was pretty different with Tristan in person, we all know how positive Dabo is in person. I think this may be a case of him speaking to an audience current players and their families. We’ve read multiple recruits say they liked how Clemson sticks by their guys and doesn’t take transfers, Dabo has to absolutely convey to them, “dang, we had no choice. We were forced to do this because of _____ so our team can be successful.”

Also, as someone ITT mentioned, everyone knows there was a DE candidate on campus so he had to acknowledge that. Dabo is calculated and likes to operate discreetly, so no other positions mentioned (P seems very obvious).

Mafah “is doing great”

It was fun while it lasted guys. Another 20 carry Mafah game incoming

If he ever read how fans think of him on TWZ he would retire immediately.

So, in order to use the portal the way you were hoping we would we’d have to run off kids that we made a commitment to (as well as their parents and coaches), right?

He's not going to talk about it publicly. Again, these press conferences, as.shocking as it may be, are not for you all

It is just you and the overly negative people. Nothing he said was "cringe" which is such a overused word

It's quite clear several on here are awful poker players. Thanks for the voice of reason
