Dan Lanning gets significant pay raise as part of new contract extension with Oregon

By: Nick Bromberg - Yahoo! Sports

Dan Lanning is getting a significant pay raise.

Per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, the Oregon coach is set to receive a new six-year contract that pays him an average of almost $11 million per season. The extension comes after Oregon was the only team to go undefeated during the 2024 college football regular season as the Ducks won the Big Ten before losing to eventual national champion Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

Oregon signed the fifth-highest high school recruiting class this offseason and ranks No. 1 in Rivals' comprehensive rankings that also include signees from the transfer portal.

Lanning was the 14th-highest paid coach in college football a season ago according to USA Today’s college salary database. He had a total compensation for $8.2 million and ranked fourth in the Big Ten behind USC’s Lincoln Riley, Ohio State’s Ryan Day and Penn State’s James Franklin.

The contract extension for Lanning also comes as multiple college football coaches have gotten new deals this offseason. Day’s first national title as Ohio State’s head coach earned him a contract extension and Texas coach Steve Sarkisian also signed a new deal.

The Ducks have won at least 10 games in each of Lanning’s three seasons in charge after he was Georgia’s defensive coordinator. Georgia coach Kirby Smart has been the highest-paid coach in college football and was the only coach who had more than $13 million in total pay during the 2024 season.

A season ago, seven coaches made eight figures in total compensation. After Smart, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney was the second-highest paid coach ahead of Sarkisian, Riley and Day.
