European politics - Moving right

Both Germany and France seeing their youth lurch to the right. Illegal immigration is unpopular worldwide

Interesting - based on last week's results, they assumed the far-right would be winning the most seats in Parliament, but when it came time to vote, they couldn't stomach the thought of them taking control. Looks to be another lesson in counting your chickens.

Will be interesting to see how the parliamentary votes in France turn out.
Right wing finished in 3rd place, but we shouldn’t ignore that they’ve made a lot of gains over the past 10 years.

Polarization is the trend

True but the surge that happened in a week's time was still unexpected and dealt a huge blow to the Right. If immigration wasn't the huge issue it's become, I doubt they'd be experiencing the gains they've seen.

Of course.

The height of irony is the French right having no problem with keeping the Algerians (and other swathes of Africa) under their colonial occupation only to bitch that they have to live with these people now. They can only be French as subjects it seems.

It wasn't barbaric to torture Algerian guerillas in a war that saw hundreds of thousands of civilians killed, but if a Muslim woman wants to cover her hair, it's an affront to humanity.

Should France be concerned about Muslim extremists? Yeah, but you're not making France safer by doubling down on the position that you're fighting an existential war of civiliziations. You're merely making yourself a target and proving the extremists correct.
