Strange that liberals love McCain. Plus all his pal bearer’s were left wing- That is very telling. Then again, they love guys that lose elections- Jimmy Carter, McCain, Dukakis, Hillary, and John Kerry. This was DC. There was plenty of security in place. The fact that draft dodging Trump wasn't present was because he had insulted McCain and a host of others. And that is the same reason he didn't attend Barbara Bush's funeral. The clown ain't got no class.

A sitting President attending the funeral of a former First Lady is very irregular, IIRC. Once again, the security requirements (which are WELL in excess of anything required for anyone else in DC) cause a significant strain.

Trump did not attend McCain's funerals because he was effectively asked not to. If he crashed the party, you have a big mess. I understand why they didn't want him there and I agree that his statements about McCain's military service were WAY out of line. But it's not all black and white either.

I think you're right on most of these points, but I suspect Donald Trump DGAF about security requirements. If he did he wouldn't be throwing rallies all the time, talking about campaigning for the midterms 5 days a week, or spending every weekend at a golf course.

Presidents do that stuff. All of them do it. The problem is that in certain circumstances it creates a real strain. And the Secret Service certainly DOES GAF about security, and I think if they tell Trump it's a bad idea to go to a particular place, he would listen.

Funerals are often not set up that far in advance (though McCain apparently planned all 37 of his). That makes it harder.

Golf course is easy - he owns it, and he can make whatever arrangements they need. Clear it out if they have to. And they can set that up months in advance. Same thing with rallies.

I didn't speak precisely and I apologize. I don't think Trump cares about the costs of the security. I'm sure he does care about whether or not he's actually safe. There are several reasons that I can buy about Trump not going to this funeral (McCain not wanting him there, Trump not wanting to go, precedence of Presidents not attending funerals, etc), I just don't believe Trump has a personal interest in limiting disruption or reducing expenses to the government.
