I do wonder if we did not have someone in charge trying their best to lower drug prices would Pfizer have released this info earlier? I mean Pfizer will take a hit if drug prices go lower so why not wait until after the election to make the announcement. This after there was a $1.2 billion bill passed to fun the research.

I’m part of the Moderna trial and quite positive I got the real vaccine and not placebo. Put me on my butt the next day (after second dose). I was just exhausted all day. Next day after it was like it never happened and I was fine.
Impressive numbers for sure, is that 10 million individual treatments or 20 million as it is a 2 shot round.

Well Pfizer’s vaccine requires 2 doses over 3 weeks so that is 10M people vaccinated (it is 20M doses). That will largely go to healthcare providers and nursing home residents but 10M is better than nothing.
It says 20 million Americans, mentions nothing about individual treatments.
The US is supposed to get 20M doses per month starting in December and a total of 100 doses.

Idk what Pfizer has said, but it’s impossible to develop a product for vaccinating Americans without drastic coordination with the US government. For Pfizer to say anything else would be the height of hypocrisy.
They think 20-40M doses will be available. So that is enough to inoculate approx. 10-20M people.
Basically, this should be enough to cover frontline hospital workers, nursing homes and large swaths of the first responder community.
General population is not likely to see the vaccine until March at earliest, most likely estimates I have seen are April-June. Keep in mind the Pfizer vax is a bitch to distro bc the cold chain storage is hard - requires -94F cold storage until shortly before administration. Get the temp wrong you have to throw it out. Somewhere between 10-25% of traditional vaccines are trashed annually due to cold chain snafus.
Vax goes into vials, then trays, then boxed and dry iced. GPS shipped/tracked via fedex and UPS. When it gets there, has to be kept in cold storage in limited kinds of ways and in certain types freezers so can only go certain places that can properly handle it. And fact is, there are not that many sub 80 freezers out there outside of labs. Problem. Not to mention no one has yet been trained to give it (intramuscular so shouldn't be too hard) and trained to store it.
This is complicated stuff, and people should not expect that there is a chance you will get a shot until March at earliest. If the Moderna vax pops, that will help as it is also cold chain but not nearly as cold as Pfizer vax, easier to manage.
Don't mean to be Debbie Downer just don't want people to get the wrong idea that the Amazon smile truck is coming to your door at Christmas with an inhalable vaccine you can self administer. What we have is good, but supply chain and admin is complicated as hell.

PFE got a $1.95B market guarantee for vaccine purchase from USG. To say that they are not part of Warp Speed is parsing to nth. They would not have felt comfortable investing in this process without that guarantee. It's just political silliness on both sides.

No company got money from OWS to develop a vaccine. You had to have a vaccine ready for phase 1 trials to even qualify. OWS sped up the govt review by allowing concurrent data submissions and review and it paid for the manufacture of the doses while the vaccine was going through clinical trials taking the risk off the company if it failed during testing.

I’m not saying this is very important, but OWS deserves to be lauded for what it has accomplished. It’s a huge deal, and it’s amazing that the current administration hasn’t touted it more. Unfortunately, that’s probably because they were more busy trying to downplay the virus and having Trump and his hangers-on say off the wall stuff.
Giving Trump the Heisman. They did clean it up in a subsequent statement and admit that they were a part of the warp speed cohort.
There is a real fear in the public health/phrma world that significant numbers of people are NOT going to take a vaccine that came out of the Warp Speed funnel. Aside from being completely idiotically named (who wants to take a vaccine that was developed at Warp Speed when industry standard is 8-10 years, why reinforce the negative on steroids), significant numbers of the public don't trust it because they percieve Trump ran it and exerted political independence over it. Reality is that is was run by the scientists pretty much independent of the WH with no political influence. But nobody believes anything close to Trump is absent political influence so there you go.
I think that the current administration downplaying COVID and playing defense on it instead of running into the fire and fighting hard - which is really what Trump's strength is, he's a fighter - is going to go down as one of the greatest political miscalculations of all time.
Trump should have thrown the kitchen sink at it, looked strong. He could have shown great leadership. They got it a thousand percent completely wrong and lost the election on pissed off suburban voters tired of kids being at home and old folks who thought the president didn't fight for them on it.
They had the election won and they blew it.

FedEx and UPS are the least of our worries. They know how to do this. Its the other links in the supply and distro chain that are of concern.
