CLEMSON--An unofficial student group at Clemson University has rankled some by inviting alt-right conservative provocateur and Breitbart.com tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos to speak at the school during an event called “Make Clemson Great Again.”

A group of Clemson students called WeRoar Clemson announced Yiannopoulos will speak at Tillman Hall auditorium on Oct. 18. the Greenville News reported.

Yiannopoulos is an outspoken critic of political correctness, feminism, Islam and the progressive left. He was recently banned from Twitter after actress Leslie Jones, who’s black, faced a barrage of racist and obscene posts.

WeRoar Clemson member Zach Talley says the event will be a private, ticketed event.

It comes in the wake of a nine-day sit-in at Clemson’s administrative offices last semester over a lack of diversity on campus.

This is exactly the type of publicity we need right now. This will not only do wonders for our school and its image, but will definitely bring our student body together. Should be great for recruiting too!

Yiannopoulos? Get the popcorn ready

Milo is a gay conservative. Jones' rants were worse than his. He gets banned by Twitter. Could be wrong, but I think the uproar that ensued caused Twitter to lift the ban, but I could be wrong. There is also a group on campus that plans to cause an uproar because Milo is coming. If they would just shut up and let it happen without incident, nothing would become of it.

Edit: Just looked back on some things and Milo is still banned from Twitter. The purpose for which he was banned was proven false however. Milo never made racist comments. He was banned for supposedly inciting others to make racist comments. It was later proven that the comments were happening before Milo engaged Jones. Conservatives are being silenced on social media at an alarming rate.

The folks that staged that sit-in have a right to protest. That would be a liberal or left of center group. Now another group wants to have their ideas displayed. Never heard of this guy but apparently he and the group represent the conservative or right of center politic. Shouldn't both sides have the opportunity to speak or protest. I believe that is what makes the U.S. great. Freedom to express oneself. Debate is always healthy. Perhaps uncomfortable at times but very important.

The bad publicity that is supposedly coming our way.

Well these guys will just keep the ball rolling. Nothing like having a non-university affiliated group inviting an ultra-conservative speaker to be the keynote speaker at a "Make Clemson Great Again" event to make things even worse. They're having it in Tillman Hall (an already sore spot) and its private. I mean is this a rally or something? Can the media come? It's just bizarre and not a good look. We don't need to be affiliated with them. Let them have it in a courtyard Marriott conference room if they want to have it. Not on campus.

What happens when the student group who supposedly started this wants to invite someone from the Nation of Islam or Black Panthers to speak, calls it a "Take Clemson Back" event and wants to make it a private, ticketed event? It's a slippery slope allowing this to happen.

You can't go tit-for-tat on these things.

The fact that the university validated the sit in group is what has caused this. You are right, I don't want some outside yahoo right winger stirring up trouble on our campus at all but this is what Halle s when you give in to these groups. Shits about to get real on campus and it isn't what any of us want.

Meh, he's spoken at quite a few colleges

Point taken. I can't argue with that. You couldn't be more correct. That's what Kapernick is doing right now and it's rustled some feathers. Everyone should have the right to protest--regardless of their viewpoint. Hell, the KKK held a rally in front of the NAACP in Houston, TX (with assault weapons) last week because they wanted them to denounce the BLM movement. I of course thought it was tacky and distasteful, but like you said, every group or person has a right to express their ideas.

CLEMSON doesn't need to be great again. They are great. Not perfect, but the school doesn't need to overcome this false idea it is lesser IMHO.

I have no doubt this get together will point out some valid concepts, but probably at the expense of saying some stupid stuff as well. Trying to redefine what 'great' means is a true sign of the current age.

So then why did you make your OP? You just said they have every right. Why bitch?

Um...cause this is a message board right? I think the event makes us look bad. That's My opinion. But he reminded me why they have every right to do what they were doing and I subsequently agreed. He straightened me out. Doesn't mean I have to agree with the "Make Clemson Great Again" bullshit or the speaker they're bringing on campus.

Yeah, freedom of speech is a b****, isn't it?
I'm sure the socialists that run the University are less than pleased. Socialists a d communists just hate freedom.

This would be an example of an adult response. Everyone gets an have opinion, even those that have those opposed to your own.

Yea it is. Works both ways. Just cause we don't like something a person says, doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to say it. Gotta let people have their space to say/do/act how they feel....even when you think it's stupid, dumb, or ignorant.

This diversity movement was it ever proven who actually put the banana in the tailpipe?

Guy is all substance and you've revealed yourself to be a worthless contributor
Really, that seems kinda harsh. Did i miss the part where this guy cured cancer or caught a unicorn. Why is he above ridicule in your mind while so many other people are not? Plaese make me a believer in why this guy is just the bees knees.

So it is on for one side of the discussion to literally say whatever they want no matter if they are right or wrong while costing schools millions and people jobs......

Meanwhile BLM is segregating this country more than anyone ever did and if anyone speaks up about them they are crucified.

We all knew this was coming. The race baiters have gotten what they wanted. Now everyone is pissed off no matter their color.

Stupid f@@@@@@" main stream media bitchassness

This should do wonders for recruiting in football and basketball.

Pro Tip: Stop reading immediately after any journalist that uses "alt-right".

Well gay British guys haven't exactly been flag bearers for the Republican Party. Alt seems like a nice way of saying that don't you think?

Yea..someone will try to use it. We know Clemson is better than that. I'm glad we have great coaches and great leadership from our president to help snuff out any misconceptions people try to create about us.

What are they going to say about Clemson?

"Those guys at Clemson let a gay conservative speak."

I don't see the connection. Care to enlighten me?

Does that mean it didn't happened? Not necessarily right?

Those schools' geographical location, past/history in regards to race relations, and current campus constituency (from a political standpoint) is the probably quite different from Clemson's even though the racial demographics may look similar between the schools. If I'm a rival recutirer for those other schools, I can think of no way to spin a visit by him negatively for those other schools. On the other hand, I can literally think of 5-7 ways to leverage his visit and spin it into something negatively for Clemson ( if I'm a rival recruiter). It happens man--trust me. Recruiting is an ugly game.

Wonder if they're calling their events "Make UCLA/Michigan/Oregon Great Again." You really don't see how this can be spun negatively for recruiting?

Nah. I can see the confusion. "alt-right" is Clinton / main stream media derogatory wrapping up all Republicans as far right bigots. Hilldawg popularized this in her speech yesterday. It's like deducing a person's party if the say illegal or undocumented, basically. It shows your bias either way. That's all I'm saying...

No, i agree with a lot of what you're saying and could see it happening. Was just saying that i haven't seen/heard the debates are negatively affecting recruiting
