This is one thing democrats could never understand, or they just didn't care. But there were consequences for not understanding.

Optics are important. If the optics are that the border is open, then you are going to get more attempted crossings.

If the optics, or advertising, is that the border is closed and you won't get in even if you (supposedly) walk hundreds of miles, people just won't try in the first place.

Are you suggesting advertising doesn't work? That is a legitimate argument, but you will have to come with some data.
