Steve Spurrier quit on his team.
That is not an opinion, it's a statement of fact. I'm not sure why people seem to be having such trouble acknowledging it.
Doesn't mean he's a terrible person, doesn't invalidate all the success he's had, nothing like that. But he quit, that much is for sure.
Every coach in every sport at every level always says the same things: Don't give up. Keep fighting. Stick together. Put the team first. I'm sure Steve has said all of those things during his career. Just not this week.
You could argue Steve Spurrier is as accomplished as just about anyone in college football history. He won a Heisman, coached a national champion, and is the winningest coach ever at Florida and South Carolina. He's also told a million funny stories and, I'm sure, helped mold hundreds of young men into fine people. None of those can ever be taken away from him. But neither do they exempt him from any criticism or blame.
There were a lot of ways for this great coach to end his career. The one he chose, in my view, left a lot to be desired.
