Iran launches missiles at Israel, IDF says

By: Dan Mangan - CNBC.com

Iran launched missiles toward Israel on Tuesday, the Israeli military said.

The announcement by the Israel Defense Forces came hours after a White House official told NBC News that the United States had seen indications that Iran is preparing to “imminently” launch a ballistic missile attack on Israel on the heels of Israel’s ground incursion into south Lebanon.

The White House official warned that any direct attack on Israel by Iran “will carry severe consequences for Iran.”

“We are actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack,” the official said.

That official and a Defense Department official said that Iran was expected to target military and government sites, not civilian locations.

The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem directed all U.S. government employees and their families in Israel to “shelter in place until further notice.”

The embassy in the same notice said it “reminds U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and increased personal security awareness as security incidents, including mortar and rocket fire and unmanned aircraft system UAS intrusions, often take place without warning.”

“The security environment remains complex and can change quickly depending on the political situation and recent events,” the notice said.

Iran’s suspected planned attack came as Israeli ground forces crossed into south Lebanon as part of an attack on Hezbollah, the militant group backed by Iran. The number of Israeli troops who have entered Lebanon is in “the low hundreds,” an Israeli official told NBC News.

Israel last week killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in a bombing in Beirut.

Iran Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the killing of Nasrallah and a senior Revolutionary Guards commander in that attack “will not go unanswered.” Araghchi said the United States was “complicit in this crime.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 250 points by 10 a.m. ET, spurred by a surge in the cost of West Texas Intermediate crude oil, on fears of heightened tensions in the petroleum-rich Middle East.

The WTI November contract was up nearly 3% by midmorning, hovering shy of $70 a barrel.

In April, Iran launched an attack on Israel that included more than 300 drones and ballistic missiles after two top Iranian commanders were killed by an Israeli airstrike in Syria.

Most of the missiles and drones were shot down by the Israeli and U.S. militaries.

scary. Israel ramped up tensions here by assassinations.... this was expected response, its still terrible all around. Israel is throwing their weight around.

Israel is going to use this, as an excuse to cause out right war.

It's not right to blame Israel in any moral sense for the assassinations. Was killing Haniyeh a bad thing? I don't think so at all.

What US/Israel and Iran + Co are guilty of is disregarding the influence of their actions on the behavior of the other. Iran promises Israel's destruction, so Israel hits Iranian targets. Israel hits Iranian targets and promises the Islamic regime's destruction, so Iran dumps money into ballistic missiles and nuke production. And the merry go round continues. It's the same phenomenon with proxies too. The US/Israel tried to topple Assad in Syria (arming Islamic fundamentalists in the process), and Russia/Iran/Hezbollah propped up Assad.

I want us to more or less stay of this crap. We put ourselves in a fight and get punched, so we have to punch back. Are we wrong to do that? No, but it can be stupid to be involved in the first place. I'm definitely not convinced that a war with Iran would be any better for us than the Iraq War disaster, and all we heard back then was how necessary it was and how evil Saddam was. The evil part was true; pretty much everything else wasn't.

Yah Im not saying its wrong, I'm just saying its not like Israel didn't want it to happen like this.

Want's a strong word for me to agree with. I don't think they "wanted" it. There wasn't this level of conflict until the October 7th attacks. They've come to the conclusion that the only way to ensure their security is through war/conflict that will end and bring peace. It's natural even if I personally disagree.

speaking plainly about what I judge to be their interpretations, they want to destroy Palestine, this pisses Muslims off, no big surprise there. Now we can talk about why they want to do that and if its 'justified'. Personally, I don't have very strong opinions there because its a glass house and rocks being thrown.

Israel ramped up tensions? You have forgotten the surprise attacks on Israel already?

George bush did 9/11?

That was really a failure on our intelligence agencies. The FBI was paying for a couple of the highjackers rent correct? The attackers trained on American soil, correct?

Not an apples to apples comparison.

And no, I won’t defend George bush either. It’s a large reason of why the Republican Party is now the MAGA party.

Just like democrats will throw Kamala to the side in a month only to never hear from her again. She is THAT bad.

Republicans realize Bush’s war was based on a pack of lies from an institution we no longer trust.

Of course that had nothing to do with a retarded bush in office. Plenty of other people to blame in that scenario. Why does the party of personal responsibility keeep blaming other people for stuff?

It’s obvious conservatives wouldn’t throw politicians away and never discuss them again. You guys always talk about how much you love mitt Romney and Mike Pence so you don’t have to tell us twice.

War was the end goal, so they used any excuse they could come up with to justify it. The WMD one resonated well; nobody bothered to consider the idea that egomanic Saddam would exaggerate. The CIA downplayed the "connection" between Saddam and al-Qaeda; the hawks weren't having it. Bush listened to what he wanted to hear.

I won’t defend Bush. He believed the CIA, so if you want to fault him for that I won’t give any pushback. The buck stops with POTUS, unless he was intentionally mislead. If you are intentionally mislead that is treason, sabotage, and many other things.

Did the CIA lie or did they just flat out get it wrong? Did Bush know they were lying?

I think most Republicans look back on that and feel they were mislead. And this at least a partial reason for birth of the no new wars MAGA movement.

We didn’t leave Pence, Pence left us. Romney ran in a contested primary against Trump and lost.

Honestly, a world without Iran - or at least Iran in it’s current form - is probably a better world.

There’s another possibility - the one tha Iraq actually had WMDs. And we found them. But we didn’t publicize finding them because WE gave the weapons to them during the Iraq/Iran war.

Or at least that’s the rumor.

Well it wasn't a secret that they had chemical weapons at one point. They openly used them throughout the 80s, and they got rid of almost everything in the 90s under sanctions after the Gulf War.

If you could wave a magic wand, yeah, but it doesn't work that way. I think we could say that about a lot of the governments in that part of the world, and we support many of them.

A world without Saddam sounded great, and we know how that worked out. Same with Qaddafi in Libya, and it would have been the case in Syria if we had our way.

Rumor is - and just a rumor at this point - that they didn’t get rid of them. They still had them. And then we found them during the second gulf war. But kept it secret because - wait for it - we gave them to them.

Not sure what exact kinds of weapons they were. I always assumed any WMDs in Iraq went to Syria before the invasion.

Exactly, this wasn't on the FBI or CIA. This was 100% on the Bush administration. What I've always heard was that Saddam hatched a plot to kill George H. W. Bush when he went to Kuwait. George W Bush's ass was peppered by that, so he was open to some payback. The big mover here IMHO was Dick Cheney. This was was one of the single biggest Grifts in US history... even bigger than the Jared one under Trump. Cheney was of course the CEO of Halliburton. He stepped down to be VP and had his huge stock holdings in Halliburton frozen while in office. Once the war started, Halliburton was awarded multi BILLION dollar security contracts from the US as a sole source bid.

Note that I don't consider NPR to be a great source as I consider them to be left biased as is ICIJ, but like CNN/FoxNews, they usually get the raw facts correct. And I'm WAY too lazy to go into the DoD database to look up the actual details.

and it's the gift that keeps on giving... From early this year:

To be fair, Halliburton has a fairly solid reputation and there's no doubt they did some good work in Iraq. But giving out multibillion dollar contracts as a sole source bid to a company who's CEO just stepped down to become the current VP? That smells!
