With all of the discussion of the defensive staff and firings, I was wondering if people on the board understand how hard that is (let me say up front that I agree that changes need to be made). In my career as a head coach and athletic director (which is currently in its 49th year), I have been on both ends of the deal. Coaching staffs, if they are any good which this one is, become close because of the enormous amount of time you spend together and the teamwork needed to put a good team on the field. After a while, the line between staff and family disappears. It is a gut-wrenching decision when a change becomes necessary so this is not easy on Dabo. Then there is the question of can you replace the staff member with somebody better. The change also affects feelings within the staff. It is important that the rest of the staff KNOW that the change HAD to be made. So this is a very hard thing to do.
I would hope that Dabo does it in the right way. I was "not renewed" once in my career for making the wrong board member angry by not giving his relative special privileges...I treat all my players the same no matter who they are, and found out when his wife told mine at the grocery store that she was sorry that I had been fired.......they had not told me yet. So how this is handled is very important.
