Strom Thurmond was a member of the Democratic Party for the early part of his political career. He was first elected to public office as a Democrat in 1929, serving as the superintendent of education for Edgefield County, South Carolina. He continued to serve in various roles as a Democrat, including as a state senator, circuit judge, and governor of South Carolina.
In the 1948 presidential election, Thurmond broke from the Democratic Party to run as the candidate for the States' Rights Democratic Party (often called the "Dixiecrats"), a segregationist offshoot of the Democratic Party. After his unsuccessful presidential bid, he returned to the Democratic Party and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1954.
Thurmond officially switched to the Republican Party in 1964, amidst the shifting political landscape of the Civil Rights era. So, he was a Democrat for about 35 years in his political career, depending on whether you count the Dixiecrat period as part of his time in the Democratic Party.

Yes and the Democrats repudiated his positions on being a racist pos. Jfk was elected. The civil rights act passed. Since then the republican southern strategy had been to gin up racism and any type of misogyny and bigotry. You really were close you just stopped paying attention to the rest of the story .
Also the Dixiecrats were a states rights first political org. Sounds familiar.

This doesnt make a difference to me but it is some data.

Every Living Former U.S. President, Except Donald Trump, Direct Descendants of Slaveholders Including Biden and Obama

Why would the party of the kkk do that? Also JFK was a conservative dem. Again conservatives have always been anti-slavery and pro civil rights. Its why we founded the Republican party to begin with. Later years non-conservatives got into the Republican party and convatives joined the Democrat party...

You have the mental capacity of a tomato. I'm absolutely shocked you're able to work a computer/phone. Please educate yourself.

Sure it happens. Remember the two leftist clowns that went to a Trump rally dressed as clan members? Got dat ass kicked by a black Trump supporter as the crowd cheered. Nobody likes the clan except leftist....
LMAO... Trump himself said that those Nazi wanna bees in Charlottesville had some "very fine people" in there with them. Almost all Republican hate these racist bastards, but EVERY ONE of those racist bastards is pro Trump.

The civil rights act was the defining turning point. Dems became the party for civil rights ever since it was part of there platform. All the southern racists in their disgust joined the Republican party

He's trying to insinuate it was the Democratic party who did those klanny things without owning up to the fact that the parties switched platforms since - hence yesterday's Democrats are today's Republicans. He'll give you a twisted tale about how that's not so but everyone knows it true.
Robert Byrd says, hello.

Barry Goldwater voted against the civil rights act.... i mean cmon

Smart people understand this bad attempt at gaslighting the board.
So it's gaslighting to point out when a dem was an actual high ranking member of the klan, but not when you try to make the leap from right wing nuts supporting a candidate to implying that means he approves of, or agrees with their views.
Do you agree with Biden's pro Antifa and blm.org views?

So did Albert Gore and Robert Byrd(who probably had to take of his hood and put out his torch to vote)
They did. Dont remember gore but byrd wrote a history of the senate. He calls his filibuster and vote against the civil rights act the worst mistake of his life. He went on to mind his ways. Changed his mind.

Not playing your little schoolyard game where the subject keeps changing, the goalposts keep moving and your responses get screwier. We were talking about Robert Byrd.

"I know I was wrong," Byrd said in a 2005 interview. "Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times ... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."

Byrd didn't immediately make the leap from Klansman to civil rights advocate, though: In fact, he was part of a group of senators that filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He also opposed the Voting Rights Act of 1965, though he voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1968. He later said that his membership in the Baptist church led him to change his racial views, but the need to abandon his segregationist position in order to join his party's mainstream was surely a factor in his evolution.

Nevertheless, by the early 2000s Byrd had built a reputation as a staunch advocate for civil rights, earning a 100 percent approval rating from the NAACP. He also championed funding for a national memorial to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"The greatness of women and men is often best judged from an historical perspective," he said at the time. "History gives us the detached perspective that allows us to better understand and appreciate the person, the cause, and the legacy."

I am well aware of his history, thanks. Also, we all know if he were a pub, he would never even be given a chance to change his mind.
Dems wanted to disqualify Brett Kavanaugh bc there was a picture of him in blackface from some school play or talent show when he was basically still a kid - even after he explicitly stated he was not racist and was sorry if anyone was offended.

I mean it would not matter if a pub did change their mind, they would be canceled. The made up rape bs was just that. Even that women's own friends who she reportedly told what happened would not corroborate her story and some even basically said she was lying. These were democrat friends.

Of course I was aware that you knew, but like a typical alt-righter you left out the context that would have helped the board understand the full picture.

And of course then you jump to B Kav who I never piled up on. I didn't like them digging into his high school days because god knows, we all did some stupid shit back then, and I'm sure I forgot most of it.
