He joined prior to the season and his wife and children were already catholic. I think this is awesome and makes complete sense. Of course, I'm catholic myself, and likely biased.

Even as a catholic though...I don't know that I'd want to go back to the mass before games tradition. I think Kelly had the right idea making it the night before the game. I would have a hard time getting amped up for a game immediately after a solumn mass.

It’s the church man. Been dividing for a millennia. I attended a Southern Baptist Convention church in Clemson for years and couldn’t be a member until I was baptized by immersion. I never did, don’t believe in “church membership” as defined by denominations But that’s just me.

This is just infelicitous phrasing that clearly was supposed to mean that he was already a Christian before joining a Catholic Church. I don’t care for some of the ways Catholics talk about themselves, or for some of their theology, but it’s a beautiful tradition that’s clearly within Christian orthodoxy.

It’s the church man. Been dividing for a millennia. I attended a Southern Baptist Convention church in Clemson for years and couldn’t be a member until I was baptized by immersion. I never did, don’t believe in “church membership” as defined by denominations But that’s just me.

There is the universal Church and then there is the church community you’re a member of. All Christians are part of the Church, but joining a local church community that has rites and rules that form the community is biblical. Church (capital C) membership is a prerequisite for church membership, but just never being a member of a church community isn’t wise for human beings or biblical.

My wife is Catholic…so our boys will be raised as well.

Im not anti religion, but organized religion definitely makes me cynical about some the things. Runs like a business and I think the Catholics have figured it out better than others.

Cynical is a dismissive and derogatory term for someone demanding the truth. You don’t have to negatively label yourself.

It’s on the institutions to fulfill their mission and reveal themselves as they profess. That doesn’t make you a cynic, just someone expecting a fair handshake.

On a side note, I recently had a couple of heart procedures (ablation gone awry) but it was touch and go for a couple days and they asked me what denomination I was, I quickly replied, “I love Jesus.”
She asked if I wanted to speak with a pastor, I said, “Nope, Jesus and I talk all the time.” She checked a box and walked out.
