The process to convert to catholicism takes a long time. He's been at this more than a whim on a weekend. It's the culmination of a bunch of time, classes, etc.

I’m not sure what your confusion is. They’re just saying that he was a member of another Christian church before he joined the Roman Catholic Church. Christian is the broad category of which Catholic is a specific kind. Your analogy in makes sense if you think African American all Christians are Catholic in the same way that all “Black” people are African American.

It get it but the missing word "already" or a similar qualifier makes it also read as though he WAS a Christian but now he's something different that is NOT a Christian. Like he entered the religious transfer portal and left Jesus U behind.
It's more my campaign about bad writing and bad editing in professional situations more than anything, and one would think that the diocese would be especially sensitive as some evangelicals suggest that Catholics are not true followers of Christ, as one poster here suggested re Pope, Mary etc.
Sure, but I think they were probably writing for a Catholic audience that wouldn't have read it that way.

Catholic and Christian are terms often misunderstood.

Statistics are still hanging on a bit that American is a Christian nation.
Not sure how many believe that anymore.
All I am saying is claiming to be a Christian nation, state or individual is in the eye of the beholder.
God knows.
We don't.
But there are indications.
