For me it has to be allowing offensive linemen to extend their arms and use their hands when blocking. Around the early 80s depending on level of football.
Before that they almost had to keep their hands clenching their own jersey.
The offensive linemen were often 245-250lb or less. I don’t think today’s 325 lb linemen could play that way. Imagine how much harder blocking was. The defense always had full use of hands. It totally changed the position. The Fridge saw the transition, I believe.
