NFL to discuss National Anthem controversy next week, Roger Goodell says

The NFL will take a pretty big legal risk if they attempt to force players to attend and stand for the National Anthem. This is where government gets a little hairy for me and enters into a scary slippery slope.

We are not North Korea or some communist regime (or maybe we are, who knows).

If Goodell caves and it takes it that route, we may see another "replacement player" season like '87.

I always have felt the playing of the national anthem before football games, is cheesy, and almost Orwellian. Its supposed to be entertainment-its not that big of a deal where it should require the anthem-we don't play it before movies, concerts, theater, whatever. It kind of cheapens the anthem really. But its a tradition now so its going to go on for quite a while.

I have no idea when that started to be commonplace, and don't really care to research it. Would not be surprised if it originated somewhere due to a marketing angle, or making people feel that attending this event was something so important, we are going to play the anthem. So this is a big-time event you are attending, see you next time.

You are dead on. It was the 1918 World Series. The Cubs and the Red Sox. The Cubs were losing and the fans weren't into it at all. During the 7th inning stretch of one game, the Cubs played it to get the crowd excited and into the game. The idea was that they would scream and shout when they heard it. The Cubs won so they did it the next game and won again. When the series went back to Boston, the Red Sox decided to play it before the game to keep the crowd into from the start. They won and kept it doing as a hype thing (think "I believe that we will win") and it just sort of went from there.

It was never about a respect for America thing or anything like that. It was a crowd pump maneuver that kept being done because it was considered good luck.

WHY THE FVCK DOES ANYONE CARE ABOUT THIS? JUST LET THEM DO WHATEVER THEY WANT FOR A 45 SECOND SONG. DON'T BE SUCH A SNOWFLAKE ABOUT THE WHOLE THING. JUST IGNORE IT. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO IGNORE THE TAPE OF TRUMP GRABBIN PVSSIES (HILARIOUS, BTW) AND CHALK IT UP TO STUPID LOCKER ROOM TALK. SO WE SHOULD IGNORE A FEW PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES TAKING A KNEE DURING A SONG AND CHALK IT UP TO THEM NOT UNDERSTANDING BLACK OPPRESSION OR WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE. THE NATIONAL ANTHEM CAN MEAN WHATEVER TO ANY AMERICAN. UNLESS SOMEONE IS TAKING AWAY YOUR ABILITY TO ENJOY IT (SILENTLY KNEELING IN A STADIUM OF 80K PEOPLE IS NOT), THEN QUIT BEING SUCH A PVSSY ABOUT THE WHOLE THING.

WHAT DO YOU FVCKS WANT? A LAW FOR CITIZENS TO STAND AT ATTENTION FOR A SONG?

How ironic you telling someone to just "ignore" something they don't agree with. When not only do you not ignore, you personally attack and insult posters who don't share your opinion. Practice what you preach.

Figured it had to be something like that. Would not have been surprised if you said it was Wringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey that started it.

I don't know a single person that has stopped watching because of the anthem stuff.

I do, however know many people that have stopped watching over the last several seasons due to the degradation of the product on the field.
I dont know you but I HAVE stopped watching because of the Stupidy of the players taking a knee

sure, but thats not what the knuckle dragging "sheeples" who didn't bother to actually read polls, and instead took "MSM" folks at face-value are arguing//regurgitating.
See I don't expect you to understand, but this is why your boss lost. Her, like you, are too arrogant to respect the opponent. The opponent deserves respect and is equal to you in everyway no matter how educated or smart you think you may be. I'm not gonna lie. I despise people like you that think you are better than others. You spend every breath trying to yell out you are fighting discrimination, gender inequality, and want wealth distribution, but you are actually causing the very problems you say you are fighting. What gives you the right to call people knuckle draggers and deplorable?
Not a damn thing

I am always surprised that it is often the most conservative 'constitutionalists' that want to fire people who exercise their freedoms. The Supreme Court ruled that flag burning was not against the law, for goodness sake. Said it was a right guaranteed under the constitution. And all of these folks are exercised over a few Americans who choose to kneel during the National Anthem?

Why get more upset about that than the NFL allowing players convicted of domestic violence to play? Who is more dangerous to society?
