Rename it "Whatever makes you feel good University" We can have clouds as our mascot. Even though clouds throw shade from time to time, everyone loves them.

It’s called history and you learn from it and get better. You don’t re-write it.

I have a nickname that isn’t very flattering of me but I cherish it now because it reminds me of where I have come from. A reminder of what you don’t what to be is great incentive to be and remain better

I understand and respect his opinion.

Clemson should remove the name. It doesn't take away from what Calhoun did for the University but it does represent change in our current environment.

This is such a slippery slope. How far do we go. Do we change Washington state, Washington, DC because he was a slave owner. Does UVA change everything because of Jefferson. Should all the cities that allowed the boats that brought slaves be torn down. Should everything in West Va that is named after Robert Byrd be torn down. Should the Democratic Party be disbanded because
they were the originators of the KKK. How far does it go, because this is just a few examples. Another thing that is never, will never be decided on, Who is the moral police that will make these decision?

I think Nuk would 100% agree with you that you can’t rewrite history and that’s why he believes it’s wrong to honor Calhoun.

Tillman Hall and Clemson will be and have been mentioned as offensive

I hear what he’s saying. And I can see his point of view. It would strike me the wrong way to have a building named after a man who made those type of statements and owned my ancestors. I don’t know if the answer is renaming everything. But I can see why he feels the way he does.

Changing the name of a program and building doesn't change history. The honors program did not begin with Calhoun's name attached, It was re-named that almost 20 years after the program started. Changing the name now is no more changing history than when they changed it then.

Exactly. Most confederate memorials and honors like this were done long after the civil war an an actual attempt to "re-write" history. Most were done during civil rights movements though, so I have no idea why they would have named it the Calhoun Honors college in the 80s...

History can live in books and museums. I don't feel anyone is calling for everything to be expunged from all existence. As much as I am proud to be an American, slavery is our original sin and the one aspect I am not proud of. We had to resort to armed conflict against ourselves to get rid of it. Statues and other idyllic monuments of people who promoted slavery should be removed as it appears to look up to their character.

Let their stories remain in history books and museums so god forbid we don't repeat our saddest chapter, but leave them there.

Not true. Most memorial monuments in this country are well over 100 years old. Most of them clearly honor dead soldiers.

My point is what someone else mentioned, where do we stop vs accepting that it was a part of history. It was what was accepted back then. We have evolved and moved on for the better. Learn from it and never go back to it. Abe Lincoln was a slaveowner. Go read the Lincoln-Douglas debates and tell me what you think about the man that abolished slavery after reading that. Do we erase him from the history books and take down his monuments? There won’t be a monument left anywhere in the country.

This is nonsense.

Yeah... then we can do like NPR suggested yesterday and "decolonize our bookcases" and just erase history.

The idea of elminating books is only more of the "if you don't agree with me " social media tirades. We need reminders of our ugly history lest we repeat it.

And as far as what Nuk said, I am fine with it as each persons opinion has merit and worth. It's called discussion not shouting.

The current environment is not the the permanent nor future environment. History is history.

This is nonsense.

Abe Lincoln- Lincoln-Douglas debate. This is as racist as it comes.

“I will say then, that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters of the negroes, or jurors, or qualifying them to hold office, of having them to marry with white people. I will say in addition, that there is a physical difference between the white and black races, which I suppose, will forever forbid the two races living together upon terms of social and political equality, and inasmuch, as they cannot so live, that while they do remain together, there must be the position of superior and inferior, that I as much as any other man am in favor of the superior position being assigned to the white man.”

Lincoln Memorial has got to go. So does the $5 bill

There's a massive difference between re-writing history and deciding who to honor with a prestigious designation.

Why not name it after someone who encapsulates the values that Clemson stands for today? Best is the standard.
