Pretty scary what twitter, unions and some out-of-touch politicians can do to ruin an economic opportunity. Hopefully everyone learns a lesson from this - particularly some wet-behind-the-ears congressional reps.

https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/op...rt-mujica-regarding-amazon?curator=MediaREDEF

"Incredibly, I have heard city and state elected officials who were opponents of the project claim that Amazon was getting $3 billion in government subsidies that could have been better spent on housing or transportation. This is either a blatant untruth or fundamental ignorance of basic math by a group of elected officials. The city and state 'gave' Amazon nothing. Amazon was to build their headquarters with union jobs and pay the city and state $27 billion in revenues. The city, through existing as-of-right tax credits, and the state through Excelsior Tax credits - a program approved by the same legislators railing against it - would provide up to $3 billion in tax relief, IF Amazon created the 25,000-40,000 jobs and thus generated $27 billion in revenue. You don't need to be the State's Budget Director to know that a nine to one return on your investment is a winner."

"Make no mistake, at the end of the day we lost $27 billion, 25,000-40,000 jobs and a blow to our reputation of being 'open for business.' The union that opposed the project gained nothing and cost other union members 11,000 good, high-paying jobs. The local politicians that catered to the hyper-political opposition hurt their own government colleagues and the economic interest of every constituent in their district. The true local residents who actually supported the project and its benefits for their community are badly hurt. Nothing was gained and much was lost. This should never happen again."

It is amazing. A certified socialist denied 25,000 people jobs. That is 25,000 people she could have tried to pry money away from under her socialistic ideas. Judging on the comments made by AOC she actually thought New York was sitting on $3 billion. I swear it is amazes me how these people win elections.

And this is not a political thing. It is a commons sense thing. I have said it for awhile now. If you wanna balance a budget or simply cut down on government spending go find 100 single Moms. 100 single moms working 2 jobs to make ends meet. Let them go in and show you where to cut money. I know it sounds silly but how can we have single parents raising kids and struggling yet have a bunch of "educated" people in C that have no clue. It astonishes me.

I think this was a cluster**** all around.

Amazon did not do their homework. Had they, then they would have realized they didn’t have the right people at the table to make this work.

And it’s not just 25,000. It’s the total families impacted of 100,000. It’s the other businesses that develop around it.

It’s the image of Queens and LIC benefiting massively.

It’s beyond insane.

I agree. I mean look at Greenville SC. How much of an impact has BMW had on the area over the long term?

This was stupid. Would love to have Amazon in Denver instead.

Hopefully our elected officials are making inquiries about a possible Amazon location in upstate SC. We are basically union free cheap labor by comparison to NYC.

Eh at the end of the day NYC doesn’t need amazon. It’s already an over saturated city. Why doesn’t amazon go to somewhere in the Midwest in the dying rust belt and revive a town with all of their jobs and wealth
Amazon employes nearly 700,000 people worldwide.

Nearly 700,000 people.

New York needs all the risk-takers and job creators it can get, as does every other state. Even if one is the biggest pro-government/government-centered society fanatic on the planet (which unto itself is baffling), you still have every incentive in the world to get off the backs of risk-takers/job-creators because these people create jobs, meaning when the folks they employ earn paychecks, those folks actually pay into the system (a portion of their earnings go to the government) versus living off the system. In other words, because they're actually working, ultimately, they're actually sending more dollars/revenue to the government. That's why states - most states - give tax breaks to corporations, whether it's Amazon or ExxonMobil or here in South Carolina, BMW.

It's better for this country for more of its citizens to have jobs (and pay into the system) versus food stamps (meaning they're living off the system ... meaning they're propped up by the government).

Give someone a job and they're going to spend money in your economy, they're going to invest it (401k/IRA/taxable account, where they would pay taxes to the government on any dividends received) and they're going to have taxes (which go straight to the government) withheld from their paycheck.

Risk-takers/job-creators are the last people on the planet who should be penalized. Penalize them, demonize them and they have virtually no incentive to reinvest into their businesses, they have no incentive to create jobs and no incentive to start more businesses.

Eh .... need access to a major airport. Additionally, Manhattan may not “needed” Amazon, BUT Queens would’ve benefited greatly from it.

Truly a case of winning the battle but losing the war.

Did Greenville ever put in a bid?

I’m not sure but it’s important to Amazon to be in an area easily accessible by a flight. The Nashville airport will likely be able to add enough flights and it is already a pretty busy airport. DC and NYC speak for themselves. GSP doesn’t have the access that Amazon desires

I get the worship of the wealthy but bezos is worth 130 billion. There is absolutely no incentive to make any more money. He’s already the most powerful person on earth that’s not the US President.

New York may have lost potential growth, but the city is already very strong and has plenty of people already. It doesn’t “need” a huge company to come in and drive people out. Like I said, any mid size rust belt city would get 100x the benefit from an Amazon HQ2 than NYC, along with probably better tax benefits for the company just off being in a red state.

Amazon is a very left-leaning company. I was not surprised when the Raleigh area was dropped because of a lack of public transportation and the concern over the "bathroom issue" which was fixed. Charlotte was never in the running because of the origin of the "bathroom issue".

Why Atlanta was dropped, I have no idea. To me, the facility should be in the southeast. Expanding population, right to work states, weather (few stoppages for snow), cheaper land, in general. There is a reason FedEx is in Memphis. Boeing, BMW, Mercedes, Michelin and Volvo are in SC and on and on throughout the Southeast.

Worship of the wealthy? Seriously?

Who do you think creates jobs in this country? The guy took risks, he created nearly 700,000 jobs over the last 20 years. What on earth is wrong with that? Good God. I mean wow. There should be a statue of the guy. What an incredible impact on this economy he has had.

Nearly 700,000 jobs created because this guy had a vision and an idea. What a winner! The American dream!

Even if you're a full-blown socialist and you want every government-run program on the planet to be implemented (which of course requires more and more tax dollars = meaning citizens would cough up 70-75% of the money THEY earn), you do realize that this guy is sending your beloved government a TON of tax dollars, given the jobs he has created? You can't create these beloved government-run programs without tax dollars. You do realize that, right?

New York most certainly does need this deal. New York is already facing what many states up north are facing in that a lot of people are getting the hell out because they're tired of living under crushing property taxes. A guy from New Jersey just moved in next door here to me in North Myrtle Beach. Why? He got sick and tired of being raked over the coals with ungodly high taxes.

If someone tells me they want me to give them $3 billion and in the coming years I'm going to accidentally get a whopping $27 billion in return, I'm going to take it like a thief in the night and beg them to do another deal with me. Where do I sign? Thank you sir. May I have another? On what planet does that not make sense?

Even ultra-liberal, tax-and-spend, big-government New York mayor Andrew Cuomo is ripping the morons in his state who blocked the Amazon deal. That speaks volumes.

Cris as my Dad always told me. "A poor man ain't never gave me a job"

This is dead wrong. NYC and N.Y. state need all the high income taxpayers they can get. They are both hemorrhaging high income tax payers as we speak

It's not growth the city was after. Many of the potential employees already lived in the city. That was part of the reason they chose NYC. It was about tax revenue. The city isn't going to make that up. Nobody else is coming to take their place. If anything more companies will stay away now.

From what I’ve read, this seems like it wasn’t the fit that either party thought it would be. Seems positive they figured that out before it was too late.

Sound like @johnhugh should be running for NY’s 14th district next time around. The lack of knowledge amongst some these days is frightening.

You are right that it never would have worked. The amount of on the ground protests that Amazon would draw from the Dem-wits would make this a disastrous and abusive relationship from day one

I wouldn’t count on Bezos to bring in a bunch of better paying jobs for the current residents of NYC. The guy makes money off the government. Doesn’t pay his employees enough so they have to use government handouts. Not all job creators are saints. Giving the rich more money usually results in them just keeping it, widening the income gap.

Lol. Conservatism sounds great in a vacuum until the real world comes calling

Haha yeah because I’m sure your ideas are so realistic in the real world. @johnhugh supporting the gaynewdeal

This is the correct answer. Amazon cut folks at the local level out of the negotiations early on. Cuomo and Di Blasio assured Amazon this approach would work. It blew up.

You think a lot of people averaging $150k salary want to live in some below average city in the Midwest? Talented people want to live in a thriving city.

Even if The UpState had the talent pool to pull from, South Carolina has proven it cant handle the current hyper growth.

For one, I think that the State Government and People let the road infrastructure deteriorate to the point it will never be able to catch up.

AOC, Bernie, Warren, Harris, and and all those socialist loving democrats can stick it up their collectivism asses. You reap what you sow. No sympathy for their citizens and voters. You voted for those idiots, you live with the consequences. Wasn’t it the Democrat messiah Obama that said “elections have consequences?” Why yes, they do.

They are getting exactly what they deserve for electing a 29 year old bartender who doesn’t even live in the district. She claimed her late fathers residence in order to get on the ballot
There is a reason companies don’t let the 20-somethings working there make the major decisions

I can't wait to vote for AOC in the general election! I want to get paid to stay home and watch NefFlickers and dunk on scrublets in Apex on teh Xbawks.

meh.

People on this board get their panties in a wad when talking heads and people outside of the program don’t know what they are talking about in regards to dabo/program.

I just get a laugh out of CuTigerman811618 typing away from somewhere like Pelion about how dumb New Yorkers are.
the only new yorker that i have a good case for calling stupid is AOC
