OT: antibody testing for Covid-19...not quite there yet unfortunately

I heard that anyone who wants a test can get one... AND that since PRIVATE companies were helping out the government, these tests would be perfect.

I also know that if there is a problem with these new tests, it's probably a previous admin's fault and that Trump is not to blame in ANY WAY.

Would you rather have the government/CDC come up with test? That worked real well early on in this process since they entirely screwed up the whole process until they allowed private companies to get involved a several weeks ago. Had the CDC worked with private businesses early on a lot of the testing situation would be in a better place than it is now.

Abbott Labs is leading the way with the 15min COVID test and the antibody test they announced today.

I agree that the CDC screwed up early on this. No question about it. Perhaps because what they are doing is HARD? So you've got agencies that do this for a living and they messed up. Perhaps we could look at what they did wrong and maybe fix that so that it doesn't happen again? Or you know... just ignore all the expertise and years of experience and throw everything out b/c of a mistake. Then get a bunch of companies that don't have any experience to do it... then act surprised when that goes south?

The only person I saw that has taken on of these got 2 positives and 2 negatives in 4 tests, so I would say that specific test has a ways to go.

Lol at just a ‘mistake’.

yep, a mistake. And last I heard the CDC didn't provide tests for the world, just the US (just a mistake right???) But again. They rushed the test and it was wrong... so your expert opinion is to just let a bunch of folks that have never done anything like this take over. And that's going to be better in some way?

No, I say let’s do it your way. Keep paying 500 mill a year to an org that clearly provides nothing in return.

The government is trying to cover up how many folks have actually been exposed/had this thing. There is a reason that they are rushing to discredit the antibody tests.

So did the CDC stop trying to make tests after the screwed up the first round?

What would be the benefit to the conspiracy? If lots of people have been exposed and are walking around doing just fine, then that should be a good thing as it means mortality is even less than what we know now which is even less than initial predictions.

It would be my guess that they would get a ton of back lash for the shutdown. If as many folks have had it that the antibody tests are showing, and we've been doing the social distancing/shutdown deal, then wouldn't the approach we've taken have been a massive overstep?

Sure. In hindsight. I guess.

I respect your buddy's diligence. Don't think I would take the time or money to have 4 tests taken!

In hindsight in might look like the wrong move, but all the serology tests have just now become available (and some studies are just now being published from Europe) but it would look even worse if they keep kicking the can down the road for weeks and then it is discovered that 20-50x the number of people have had it than official infection rate.

At the same time they don't even know if you get asymptomatic case and show limited antibodies if you can't just get it again in a month like a cold and some of the initial serology is showing really weak antibodies in young people with mild cases.

I don't know them.

It was a Dr on Twitter. Did the test that looks like a pregnancy test.

I think these are the tests that the FDA didn't have to approve and are proving to be highly inaccurate. May show COVID antibodies when you really had a cold because they are such similar strains, etc..
