looks like he might be a bit of a liar.

from two silver stars and 5 bronze stars in his book and movie

to

1 silver star and 2 bronze stars in reality.

He straight up lied about 4 medals, and was told by members of his team and superiors to correct the record, and he chose not to. The stolen valor community is normally crazy up in arms about anyone who does this.

“The SEAL leadership was aware of the embellishment, but didn’t want to correct the record because Kyle’s celebrity status reflected well on the command.”

And, in case you didnt know, this isnt the first time Kyle lied about something (we all lie, but his are very public). He claimed that he punched jesse ventura in a bar in California, a claim a jury determined was a lie, and awarded ventura almost 2 million in damages (that his wife is appealing).

Does this impact your opinion of him? fwiw, i think he is a hero and should be celebrated, regardless of the false claims.

its like brian williams in a way. public figures should know that claims they make in public will be investigated/vetted etc. its just dumb of him.

His discharge papers confirm his medal count. I'm sure the papers could be wrong, but he obviously had reason to believe the medal count he claimed.

Also, he isn't here to defend himself. The 'investigation' is in really poor taste. And they posted his article around memorial day?? Please, let's let him rest in peace.

And you posting this garbage just shows even more how much of a bitch you truly are. The guy regardless of medals amd recognition has done more in his lifetime for this country than you could ever dream of.

He's a hero. There was no reason for him to lie. But you already got your facts wrong. The article said he got one silver star and three bronze stars with valor(not two). I say that to say I think you enjoy pointing out that he lied. I guess it's because he is celebrated by our more conservative citizens. I know a lot of people don't like what he did or what any of our troops do. I am not one of those people. I am thankful we have men and women who are willing to defend my freedom. I am forever grateful and appreciative of all of them. There are plenty of people who have lied about far more serious things than some medals.

article brings up the discharge papers, says they are wrong. Im not sure I agree with that statement that he had reason to believe the medal count he claimed. He was told, according to the article, that the book misrepresented his count by a superior.

maybe the investigation IS in poor taste, and the timing is obviously dumb.

Don't mind Iceheart...he's the stereotypical betamale that would piss himself in the company of a true warrior.

Don't give a shit if the man was awarded any medals. A damn American hero in my book. With the amount of pussification in this country now, I wish we had more like him. God bless Chris Kyle and anyone else who provides the freedom we cherish.

AMEN

a hero is not a dude dressed up as a bitch. This country is in a sad state.

no.

words have meaning. nobody ITT is "making fun" of chris kyle. i even put in my OP that I think he is a hero.
Sure...
Your OP truly conveys his sacrifice to this country.
Please do TI a favor and die in a fire.

I think we all can recognize the heroics of Kyle, while understanding that he had some complexities. Iceheart is the house flaming liberal but there are some nuances to the Kyle story that he points out.

The ending of the movie American Sniper, at the end of the day that's the way I feel about that guy (when the credits are rolling).

This is the best quote from the article:
...But he’s only got the three Bronze and one Silver Star.

Agree with above. Hero. Period.

You can be confused about your eligibility to wear the GWOT. But seems difficult to not be sure of a silver star. Would imagine there is more to the story.

Here's my thoughts. Dude was a lIar but also a hero. Some (really all) of our greatest historical figures had some flaw(s) that people can point to to discredit them. MLK is a good example. But that doesn't really make what they did less important.

I find his penchant for stretching the truth and at times outright lying to be strange. He once bragged about shooting people from the roof of the superdome after hurricane Katrina. Again. This was false. So he's making up a story and bragging and sniping his fellow Americans.

He lied not only about punching Ventura but also that Ventura has said SEALs deserve to die for fighting in that war, which made Ventura persona non grata among other SEALs. Ventura asked for an apology and public retraction, when Kyle refused he sued.

Does this mean he wasn't a hero? Does it take away from the medals he did receive? I don't think so. I think it does taint the person that he was after he got back. I think if he were still alive more marines would be willing to be critical of him.

Being a sniper at that level, it requires a bit of insanity IMO. It's a bit different than normal combat, so much more personal where it gets pretty close to murder compared to normal combat. Takes a special breed to do that.
I wouldn't say murder but certainly stalking.

Yea its not murder, but a much more personal level of killing that has to affect you once you are back to "real life" and have a lot of time on your hands. Which may be why he seemed to lose it a bit.

It does seem strange that he had some trouble with the truth. Repeatedly. He was and is an absolute American hero. Alpha male. But it's almost like he wanted to keep building the legend bigger and bigger. I don't know. Strange.

No matter the cause or justification, if you kill that many people up close and personal, that's going to impact you in some strange ways. I remember watching a documentary about a Vietnam era sniper who had a lot of kills, think his last name was Hitchcock, you could tell he was a different dude.
