It's interesting you use that term "silent majority". I just took the family on vacation this week and had time to listen to a 6 hour podcast about David Duke and his rise in Louisiana politics in the 80's and 90's. Duke always outperformed his poll numbers in the elections. He attributed it to the "silent majority". What that meant was that when white people were polled they were often too embarrassed or afraid to admit that they were going to vote for a racist, former KKK Grand Wizard who was recorded in an interview once saying that if he could win the election then it would be easy to then become a fascist, authoritarian dictator with unquestionable power, just like his idol Hitler had done. But on election day, the white "silent majority" had no problem voting for the man because they secretly shared his beliefs. He consistently carried 50-60% of the white vote.
There were more noticeable similarities between Trump and Duke.
- Duke claimed that since he was a devout christian, his past sins should be forgiven. When asked in a debate what church he attended regularly, he made up a name of a church and pastor. When pressed on it later, he said he attended so many churches that ho could not remember the names. It reminded me of when Trump said his favorite book was the bible, and then was unable to recite a verse.
- Duke often claimed he was being treated unfairly by the press when they said things about him that were 100% true. Reminded me of every time Trump gets in front of a mic.
