OT: Possible Beaches to Shutdown in S.C again

People's reaction to this virus is the dumbest thing I've seen in my lifetime. Government has way too much power, something has to change.

I agree, people's reaction to this is stupid. Completely ignoring recommendations from public health people and acting like the virus didnt exist. We have put ourselves back in this position and have nobody else to blame.

I do think its doubtful that the beach is a place where the virus will spread. But, the last time I went to Wrightsville Beach in NC a few weeks ago people were packed into small areas around the public beach access points, and like others have said I saw huge groups of people basically having big house parties with no social distancing, no masks, and not a care in the world. THAT is a good place for the virus to spread, and is probably a big reason that officials are closing beaches. Close the beach and there is no reason to for those big groups to come.

They only own property on Folly. They don’t own Folly. If they want to keep people out, then cut off state & county funds. Pay for the island by themselves. The general public should not pay a damn dime if not allowed on the “public” beaches.
Agree . I'll bet Sullivan's Island has 2000 " No Parking " signs . Take away all state and federal money .

The part you're missing is no one should be obligated to share the same opinion of the virus that you or the public health officials (who've been wrong more than right) about the virus. That's where we get into trouble. I can do my own research on the virus and its impacts.

I don't need government to tell me I can't go to the beach when there's no evidence it spreads outdoors in the wind, UV rays, heat, etc... That's called overreach. If I choose to go to the beach and "risk" getting the virus then that's my own personal choice to make, I don't need government to make that choice for me.

I completely understand where you are coming from, and I also understand the overall feeling many have on government overreach. However, many Americans have consistently shown that they will not make decisions that are in the best interest of society to help prevent the spread of the virus, and here we are almost 6 months into this pandemic with by far the worst numbers in the world. And its getting worse in some areas.

I have 3 employees currently that cant work because they were exposed to the virus. 2 are STILL waiting on tests that were done Friday and Saturday, and one cant get tested because he doesnt have any symptoms.

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCSC) - Leaders on Folly Beach say they’re hoping new parking restrictions and increased fines for violations will deter large groups on the island during the pandemic.

“I think it’s going to be interesting how it turns out but, you know, if you don’t have a place to park and you know that ahead of time, it should control the crowds pretty much,” Folly Beach Mayor Tim Goodwin said. “And we will be in forcing traffic violations and we will be in forcing parking violations.”

City council members passed an amended ordinance Thursday afternoon. Now, beachgoers visiting the island can only park in any areas specifically designated as paid parking. That means no parking along back streets or in neighborhoods to gain beach access.

The only cars allowed in city public right of way areas are residents, those with disability decals, or renters who are in spots adjacent to their rented property.

If the homeowners had a vote to make it private, they would and it would be nearly unanimous with the exception of business owners. They would gladly go the Kiawah route and have 1 or 2 public access points that you pay an entrance fee for and that's it. The amount of s#$% our family put up with as homeowners (since the late 60's) in the last 10-15 years was enough to drive anyone insane. Homeowners are at the bottom of the city's priority list. I can assure you of that. It ultimately caused us to sell and buy somewhere else private. The things we saw and heard on a regular basis were not what we wanted kids to be around. Don't get me wrong. There are a lot of good people that visit Folly that do it right. I don't want to diminish that. It's a great natural resource that if taken care of properly by the visitors, can be a great place to come for years and years in the future. There is also a large amount of trash that just ruined it for us and was magnified because we didn't view it as a vacation. We looked at it as home and it became too commercial. Again, the city doesn't give a rats behind about he home owners.

Scientifically outdoors in the sun is one of the lowest probabilities of catching the virus. Im not going to take the time and find the info but its out there. If we are going to close the beaches down, then we need to close down a lot of other things before the beach. Staying at your home inside is much more likely to spread the virus than out on a beach (unless you isolate and dont go anywhere else which is unrealistic to me).We have seen what happens when we try to shut everything down, people need places to release, the beach is one of the lowest risk places to do that. We will never eliminate all risks.

To me, its all politics.

Im not attacking either, I enjoy the back and forth.
Thanks, Donald! Still think that virus is going to disappear in the summer? Idiot

This is interesting. I had an employee that tested Tuesday early evening and results were returned within 24 hours. Fortunately, she was negative but she is still required to quarantine for 14 days.

I was tested on a Saturday morning at a CVS in Raleigh using their drive up service. I got my results (thankfully negative) on Wednesday morning. One of my employees just received his (also negative) this afternoon. The one tested on Saturday has not received them yet.

The person tested negative but is still required to quarantine? That's interesting. Is that a company policy or did the doctors recommend that plan of action?

I would think if you tested negative then you'd be good to resume your activities again.

Company policy; with no clear reason or purpose as to why they must quarantine. It would make sense to return to work upon results release but they have implemented a restriction of movement directive and in that describes what would warrant placing someone on quarantine. Visiting a testing center regardless of results is one of them.

Sounds like a great way to discourage testing!

Freedom without any civic responsibility is the new trumpian creedo. Absolutely infuriating what Fox News, Hannity, Limbaugh and their ilk have done to America.

Looks like Folly council voted "no" on the Beach shutdown but it looks like they will be taking away alot of public parking options trying to curb the volume of Beach goers. This will mainly shut down the Day trippers driving in from Charleston/James Island, etc...

The false negative rate is so high that they don’t trust negative results.

Unfortunately this is true. Story about a nurse in Houston I believe who tested negative twice but was presenting with classic symptoms so they did a CT and she was lit up with COVID.

Really?? Even worse is that 37 people liked this.

Have fun staying inside and being miserable.
I'm out and about all day. Just got back from the beach for a week too. But I wear a mask out of respect for others and for my protection. Maybe we should all try that ultraviolet light inside our body, right, Donald? Or Clorox? Or how about that miracle drug, hydroxychloroquine?

I look at it like this. If people can’t follow social distancing rules, you make it an easier decision to shut down the beaches.
You mean social “conditioning”
Let’s call it what it really is

If you really are a physician, I now know why our health care system is utter shit. Because if there is one like you there are plenty more.

Where are all the "we believe in science people?"

is there ANY study that says this virus is transmitted OUTDOORS, IN THE SUN, WITH THE WIND BLOWING?

We have to start taking a stand. If they ban the public from the beaches, my fat *ss will be going over there and going to the beach.

I'm one of the follow the science people, but you can't explain science to a mule. You have to hit the mule in the head with a board to get his attention. No matter what is being said and shown on TV, there are a LOT of folks who simply don't believe it until happens to them or someone they know. Chuck Woolery is a fine example. Here's his tweet from early in the week:

The most outrageous lies are the ones about Covid 19. Everyone is lying. The CDC, Media, Democrats, our Doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I’m sick of it.”

In other words... Thousands and thousands of people are lying just to get Donald Trump. Only Donald Trump is telling the truth.

THEN: His son gets COVID and ...

“To further clarify and add perspective, Covid-19 is real and it is here. My son tested positive for the virus, and I feel for of those suffering and especially for those who have lost loved ones.”

In other words... I guess all those thousands and thousands of people that I accused of lying were actually not lying. My bad.

Almost 140,000 people have died in about 5 months. We'll be well north of 200,000 by the middle of the fall. We should probably start taking this thing seriously. I'm not one of those people that thinks we should shut everything down. HOPEFULLY, we get a vaccine by the end of the year, but that's not a sure thing. We simply can't be shut down for that long. We (as a country) have to be working. But that doesn't mean we should be stupid about it either. And taking off most of your clothes, heading out to a packed beach and rubbing against a crowd of strangers is just plain stupid.

But you can't get that through to some folks. It takes deathly Ill or dead loved ones to do that. I sincerely hope that everyone of you that are going out and doing this stuff are telling me what a dumbass I am later...

we must do the beach differently. I’ve never come close to rubbing a stranger on the beach. To each their own I guess.
