OT: Shifting SNAP to Blue Apron type service

republicans: government is inefficient and shouldn't be trusted!

also republicans: lets create the largest food delivery platform in the world and let the government run it! Sonny Perdue is great at this sort of thing! No existing supply chain? NO WORRIES, we are the government, we got this!
I see what you are saying but the corruption within the govt food assistance programs is huge. The govt would probably save money doing it this way over the current system. There are absolutely no checks and balances in the current system. Also the corruption in the current system is 2 sided. The consumer and the marketplace both cheat the system out of billions a year.

No. Have you read about federal procurement? It is efficient and not corrupt— two statements that have truthfully been said by no one. This just moves the corruption and fraud to a different location and simultaneously lowers its already limited effectiveness. More governmental involvement is never the answer, I do not care which party is espousing it.

I’m all for reducing the items eligible for purchase under SNAP and further increasing the penalties for fraud and misuse.

I like the idea of limiting the items BUT the items being illegally bought now are not included in the program. So I honestly have no idea how to fix it.

Ir isn’t fraud to buy stuff you are allowed to buy with SNAP. Soda, candy, lobster, steak are eligible items.

They likely shouldn’t be eligible, but they are so buying them is neither fraud nor abuse just as taking the carried interest loophole is fraud or abuse even though it should be eliminated.

It's just an idea right now. Republican innovation will likely lead to leveraging existing private distribution systems (ex. Amazon).
Republican innovation?

Here's Republican innovation: Let's have an infrastructure program without federal funding. The federal government won't stop states from doing whatever states want to do. Of course, states don't have sufficient funds to build bridges, roads, rails and airports. And the federal government doesn't decide how states will spend their funds anyway.

Republican innovation: Let's spend years blaming Obama for the growth of the deficit. Trump campaigns that he will end the deficit easily. Deficit now expected to balloon to highest-ever amounts with no end in sight. Suddenly Republicans don't care about deficits.

That's Republican innovation.

Would require a whole new beaurocracy dedicated to procuring, storing, packing and shipping the food (none of which USDA or FNS do now), and then monitoring that it all goes the right places and isnt abused.

Hard to imagine govt doing any of that more efficiently and cheaply than grocery stores who already have that infrastructure and are forced to compete for the consumers dollar do, and very hard to imagine those costs being well estimated and included in the presidents budget.

Republican innovation would be to contract it out so it cost taxpayers 3x as much as the old program but funded some mini sky scraper of I 66 in northern VA.

There may be merits to delivering bulk dry peas to poor people instead of letting them buy cokes, but i would be shocked if it saved taxpayers money.

That's encouraging, however not enough clearly.

To your point I don't really like the idea of giving people money for luxury items. I do in fact like the idea that money is going to people in need. As a society I believe a major part of our duty is to help those in need. Providing birthday cakes doesn't fall under that category IMO. I would guess a large portion of the country feels the same... Maybe those who do believe birthday cakes are a need can set up a separate "birthday cake charity" and give as much batter as their hearts desire?

Little kids with poor parents dont deserve birthday cake?

Just want to see it modeled out. Then let's see banning non-nutritious and premium items from EBT modeled out. How much does it save? What is the expected impact on public health?

Who do you trust to do the analysis? The federal government?

Its a fvcking retarded idea. You want to make poor people less fat or whatever, just retrict what items they can buy on SNAP. Good lord.

Whats' this solution supposed to be fixing anyhow?

I have a much much better idea. Fund oversight of where our medicaid and medicare dollars are going. Do an audit. Spend 1 million to save 100 million. Trust me, the people billing our medicare and medicaid are crooked.

Problem is that all these companies lobby. Welp poor people can't lobby so lets fvck with them.
